Captured Deep Curl

Capture Video

Today i really tried to mess this up, but luck prevailed instead of incompetence. Before i shot the jugs, i shot paper to see where the bullet was hitting out there around 200 yard. This showed me it was hitting about 11" low. The rifle used was an X7 with a 4x scope. The load was 115g BH, 300g Deep Curl, Crush Rib sabot, and a W209 primer. I forgot to measure the exact range, but am guessing it was about 202 yard or so.

Then i set the jugs on the horse, and backed them with the phone book stack. There was a bleach bottle, windshield washer solution bottle, and a milk jug. The bleach bottle seemed like it was about a foot tall. Put the camera on the tripod, and started it running. Drove back out to 200 yard, and aimed above the jug some, intending for the bullet to hit near the middle of the jug. Forgot that the horse was standing further away than the paper target had been. The jugs were probably near 205 yard, and the bullet almost missed too low.

I couldn't find the bullet when i drove back to the jugs. All 3 jug had holes in and out. I thought it was in the phone book stack, but it wasn't. Some study led me to believe the bullet bounced off the phone book, and i thought it should be in the milk jug. It wasn't there, and i looked, and looked, and looked for it, but i couldn't find it. I was sad!

I gave up, and decided to come back tomorrow with a metal detector. When i got home, i ate lunch, and edited the pictures and video.

Two mornings ago, it was -15 at dawn. Yesterday it was -13 at dawn. Today when i finished working the pictures, the thermometer read 44 degrees, and the sun was shining; i decided to grab the metal detector, and go look for the bullet. As i drove the 17 mile, i mused that the snow might be melted enough, i would be able to see the bullet. Well, well, the bullet was visible in the snow right where the milk jug was laying after the shoot.

The bullet now weighs 300.9g. I guess there may be some debris in the 'curl', but i can't see it.

Man, that's dedication Ron. Excellent report & video. What more could you ask from a bullet? (Good shooting too!)

I guess one day I'll have to try Blackhorn in my X7. It sure does love those 300 grain Deep Curls with GOEX. Is it possible that BH will do better?

builder459 02-03-2011 01:48 PM

Darn good report," price vs performance" the DC's may well be the best bullet on the market.i will be testing the .452 300 gr DC's, with a crushed rib this weekend.what did you bait that trap with lol! Ray

pluckit 02-03-2011 02:14 PM

That sure is a pretty bullet.

jaybez101099 02-03-2011 02:15 PM

Very nice video as always. Thats how a bullet should look. I ordered some Lehigh's and the breaking pedals still has me a little worried. So for now I'm sticking with GoldDots

deer655 02-03-2011 02:26 PM

Great video. That bullet sure did as advertised. I just bought about 200 speer 357 mag bullets with the deep curl bullet. I can't believe you found it.

ADVWannabee 02-03-2011 02:35 PM

Fill me in here. That is a pistol bullet right? So it is made for lower velocities? Since you were shooting at 200 yards it would have much less velocity than at 100 yards. Have you shot one at 100 yards or less? Does it perform as well?

That is awesome performance and if it can do that inside 100 yards where all of my shots are taking I would be very interested in seeing how my guns shoots them.

Here are pictures of the same bullet after it was shot through water jugs at around 60'. The load was 105g BH. The muzzle velocity was measured at 1855 fps. That bullet weighed 262.4g when recovered.

Here is a deer killed at about 60 yard, with the same bullet/load, and the same rifle, on November 18, 2010. Note the entrance and exit holes are about 2".

smokey92 02-03-2011 04:42 PM

WOW, awesome performance. Bet there was adequate blood trail. My gun likes the .250gr, recently picked up some .300gr, look forward to shooting them...when I can get to the range. Great pictures/video.

Look up the information on the speer web site as to how these bullets are made.speer sales the plain jane jacketed bullets, similar to others on the market. the electo plating process along with the "dot" of this bullet control expansion. 10 yds or 150 yds or more as long as you have enough energy for it to expand.Sabotloader calls them a poor mans nosler, and his description is spot on. Ray

Gotbuck 02-03-2011 05:51 PM

It is amazing what that bullet can do. Thanks for sharing.

gregrn43 02-04-2011 01:51 AM

Dont think one could ask for any better mushroom than that.

That is what I wanted to hear. I use Noslers in my 30-06 and they are the bomb on deer. Since I switched to Noslers, most deer don't run and the few that do don't get out of sight. I want the same performance for blackpowder.

One more question, are the Deep Curls now called Gold Dots or did the Gold Dots become Deep Curls? I see Gold Dots on the Gander Mountain website but no Deep Curls. Also, what sabots should I get for these? I have a Knight Revolution and TC Encore if that matters.

Oh, and thanks Ron, I know what I will be doing this off season. Sighting in my guns with Deep Curls. ;)

Paul Niskanen 02-04-2011 05:20 AM

NICE WORK! Even though I don't shoot bullets like that is awesome! Looks like one hell of a deadly buleet when shot at prper range.

gman57 02-04-2011 06:29 AM

Im shooting the 250gr GDs now Im gonna have to see how the 300gr do in my rifles those exit holes are awesome thats exactly what Im looking for in terminal performance.

There called deep curls now on Speers site. since you have a knight and a encore, i would probably buy a pack of harvester crushed rib and a pack of hph-24 sabots. Midsouthshooters carries the bullets and the sabots.

Gm54-120 02-04-2011 08:42 AM

My Extreme 50 preferred the the MMP HPH-24 with a 300gr and the 250gr worked well with a Harvester Black for sub 300gr bullets or Crushrib. The HPH-24 is fine with the 250gr but its a fairly long sabot.

sabotloader 02-04-2011 09:04 AM

Gm54-120

The HPH-24 is fine with the 250gr but its a fairly long sabot.
One of the reason the petals are long on that sabot is so that they wil catch the air right out of the muzzle, open very rapidly and allow the bullet to leave the sabot very quickly. The 24 does not go down range as far as others.

fusion 02-04-2011 10:28 AM

Very impressive. Nice job Ron.

smokey92 02-04-2011 03:14 PM

No personal experience, but have heard the .300 deep curls have dispatched Elk quite effectively.

Breechplug 02-04-2011 08:25 PM

I cant wait to try em out. Great Pics! As soon as the 2 1/2' of Snow with 1" of Ice on Top starts to melt Im gonna get out and try some, could be awhile though

Here's one I recovered from a doe last weekend.

Rem 700ML 90g T7 powder 250g deep curl
she was about 130yds.

Semisane 02-05-2011 01:50 PM

A thing of beauty Nolehoe. Congratulations on the doe.

Where did you hit her? Did she drop or run?

sabotloader 02-05-2011 01:51 PM

OK... we are talking Gold Dot/Deep Curls again so I think it might be OK to bring this picture up again.

These bullets were shot into the raised portion of a water bar on a road. The water bar was 95% Palouse soil type - clay. It was completely saturated with water from melting snow and rain (mud). It really is a good medium to test bullet performance. I believe it to be more destructive on a bullet than shooting an animal even shooting through a big bone.

This was a 100 yard shot with a muzzle velocity above 1700 fps. for both weights

Nolehoe 02-07-2011 09:04 AM

Hey Semi,

hit her center mass right behind front shoulder, quartering towards me slightly. The bullet hit a rib and turned a little exiting between 2nd and 3rd ribs (counting from the last rib) and was caught by the skin. there were half a dozen smaller exit wounds from bullet frags and bone. the entrance wound was quite graphic, but a fragment of some sort penetrated her diaphragm. the punctured diaphragm along with no exit (through the skin) and the entrance being mid-ways up accounted for a sparse but followable blood trail. She lit out of there like somebody stuck a hot iron to her butt. Went about 100 yds before dropping any blood and another 60 or so before going down. will post a pic later and you can kinda see where I hit her.

I carry gold dots in 9mm and 40SW. They are an awesome round and hold together very well. I've done a bunch of testing with them in 9mm and 40cal and they always open up like that. Another good round is the Federal HST but Federal doesn't sell just the bullets.

bronko22000 02-07-2011 03:01 PM

That is very cool. Great report. Awesome bullet performance.
