What do you use for a muzzle cover to protect loaded MZ?

Curious to know how (or what) you use to protect your loaded MZ? I have seen an item called a "barrel boot" - which looks pretty cool. Please send links or be as descriptive as possible about what works for you. Looking for something that can be taken off really easy in the field when the time comes to pull the trigger.

There are lots of different things to use, but what I used a finge that I cut off of a rubber glove. Worked great, and I can shoot right thru it with no worries. I work at a paint shop, and can just grab a couple of rubber gloves from work.

Here is a link where you can buy them in a pkg of 20:

http://www.cabelas.com/barrels-choke...rel-cots.shtml

There are cheaper places you can get them, but I usually order a lot of stuff from Cabelas, so I just add on something like this.

I use a piece of Masking Tape cut in a circle about the size of a quarter or a tad bigger. I wipe the muzzle end with alcohol befor I apply it to the end and it sticks great, keeps out moisture and debris and you dont have to remove it to shoot. I just overlap the Tape slightly over the Muzzle End and work in around it.
And no I have never had a pice of masking tape get (puntcured) by anything and I go into some thick brush. Also Rain and Snow have no effect on the Tape it's pretty durable.
Now I know some use Finger Cots or Barrel Mits BUT when applied they (cover) part of the front sight on the Barrel, and if you need to use your Open Sights the Muzzle Mit or Finger Cot is in the way, the Tape is not seen when looking through your sights. A roll of Masking Tape is cheap and I think the last roll I used took me about 10 years to use up.

ballons from the dollar store... choose your colour!

Paul Niskanen 01-08-2011 05:47 PM

YUP balloons, I put 2 over the end of ANY gun I hunt with. #1 you DO NOT have remove befor the shot as the will not effect the shot placement. #2 if it's on there it is a good reminder that the gun is loaded, especially for a young or inexperianced hunter. #3 THEY ARE CHEAP!

I use electrical tape. make an x with 2 peices over the end of the muzzle. Then wrap around the muzzle with a peice to keep them from coming loose. Shoot right through it, works good for me.

+1 on the dollar store balloons

Tape, balloons, etc. but what if you do not have any and get caught in a downpour? I have used acorns, bark off trees and even leaves. I have also used my hat once in a really good rainstorm and almost had a shot at a running deer. All have worked fine with no issues. Inlines with closed breaches really do not have issues, if you have a percussion or flintlock those are really the ones affected.

Barrel cots here also they are pretty strong shhot through no problem.

electrical tape for me,and i shoot thru it.......karl

I just got some finger cots this year and have not used them yet. In 25 years of hunting with a muzzleloader, a side lock percussion, I just kept the barrel pointing down with my hand over the hammer and nipple to protect it from the rain and I never had any problems.

Great idea - wish they were available in other colors than white (at least the ones readily available). That is the only downside to this - having a "white" tipped barrel - but could easily be colored with a marker or something. Fantastic idea.

No shortage of dollar stores around here - excellent. Thanks.

Paul Niskanen 01-09-2011 07:06 AM

I always put a red, orange or yellow balloom on the barrel. It just make a person more aware of muzzel control.

Nalgi 01-09-2011 09:00 AM

Mzl cover

I use duct tape.

Those things look like heavy duty condoms!

Wazz13 01-10-2011 11:17 AM

Ditto on the duct tape. Seems to stick better than electrical tape for me.

Nimrodder 01-10-2011 01:51 PM

Electrical tape. Its cheap and works great plus you can buy the stuff just about anywhere.

romat 01-10-2011 02:00 PM

Electrical tape, doesn't affect accuracy, cheap, comes off without leaving residue, and there is a roll ALWAYS in my hunting pack. I have used E. Tape to tie back branches, make quick scope covers, bandaid, Wrap shells to stop clinking, fix a broken sling, Fasten deer tags to legs and antlers, Fasten my Predator light wires and switch to gun, Wrap around pant legs to keep bugs out, removing cactus pokies, Even made a pirate patch for one eye when bored.........

SJAdventures 01-10-2011 02:56 PM

I use what is called "Water Grenades". I get them at Walmart or RiteAid. They're even green or camo.

Nalgi - not to get off topic but that pic you have posted as your profile - WTF????? That hurts to even look at

wallnuts 01-16-2011 04:45 AM

You can by finger stalls for cuts that look like small condoms at most first aid counters. Cheaper than Cabelas.
