Cleaning questions
Like most of you I have both Inline and Side lock MZ's.
Soap and water seems to clean the bores well. My Questions After cleaning what lubes do you guys use to protect the bores? I have used the bore butter stuff over the years with limited success. I see where the Winchester Break free CLP is used. Also anyone used the Ballistol? My biggest concern is I know Black P. and petroleum oils don't mix. I can see where using something to remove the oil before loading would work. What about getting the oil out between the nipple and breach? |
I use Montana Xtreme gun oil, break free CLP, Birchwood Casey Barricade, or Rem Oil with Teflon to protect the bore. On some rifles I use Montana Xtreme Bore Conditioner. Which ever one is near me when I am ready to put my rifles away. All of them work fine.
Before I shoot, I clean the barrel with isopropyl alcohol on a patch, then a couple of dry patches. As for the breech... push a clean patch down there and shoot off a primer or cap and blow that oil into the patch. If you see burn marks on that patch, your ready to load and shoot. Never had a problem with the petroleum VS powder issue that way. |
dyna tek bore coat for inside the bore and gun shield for the outside. No oiling afterward EVER.

I use oil...I started muzzleloading in the 70s, never heard petroleum was bad for them until WonderLube or BoreButter came out...I wipe with a dry patch before loading and shoot...
