Default Cabelas Sale on 50 cal Flintlock

I was wondering what your thoughts were on this sale and if it was worth it. Cabelas is selling their .50 cal flintlock hawken kit for 299.99 normally 450.00. Is it a good buy? Isn't the gun parts made in Italy? The twist is 1:48. So not a round ball nor a sabot. Is the lock good? Does anybody own one? Sorry alot of questions. Just wanted a kit to do one day and thought this might be the way to go. I would try and hunt with this rifle.

My friend owns a Cabela's Hawkins in .54 caliber. It too was a kit when he got it. Being a carpenter, he put it together with care and really did a nice job on the rifle. It is a beautiful rifle. And a very good shooter. He's taken a lot of deer with it. It was an excellent roundball shooter. I shot it quite often at the group shoots. No recoil because of the shape of the stock. His was a percussion cap model though.

The Cabela's Hawkins in made by Investarms Inc. They same company that makes Lyman Rifles. It is the Trade rifle basically. I own a flintlock Trade Rifle and it is a great shooter with its 1-48 twist. I have one in .54 and one in .50. Both are great shooters. The lock is very fast and dependable.

Default Buy It.

I would buy one. I have 2 sidelocks with a 1:48 twist and they are both great shooters. A word of advice though, a flinter is a different world all together. You will have to experiment with the priming charge and setting the flint in the sweet spot. This is all fun though. You can get great advice here, I did.

Hey 50calty, I know you said you wanted a kit to do one day. But if you want a finished rifle for the same price check out the $300 Trade Rifle on Lyman's "specials" page.

Hey guys-
funny this should be a topic. During my deer season detox I've been surfing...online.
I see Cabela's has Lyman GPR .50 in the Bargain cave. I've been giving this rifle some thought as an alternative to a long-rifle based on all I've read/heard. I do wonder if those made today are as good quality as older versions?

Had it in my "cart" a few times now but haven't pulled the trigger-so to speak...
BTW-anyone see True Grit? Lotta shootin'.
