What's it worth?

I can get a .54 cal.Thompson Center Hawkins. The barrel is rusty inside and has had a couple inches cut off the end.Any ideas what it would be worth?

Being a .54 it is worth a little more IMO. If the stock is good, and the lock and trigger work well... depending on the rust if the barrel you might have to just decide that is junk. Offer them $125.00 and see what they say. You can always go up. Check that stock for cracks. They show up near the escutcheon plate and the tang. I have seen a rusty Hawkins go for as much as $225.00 just so you know. I guess it depends on how bad you want it.

The real problem is the fact the new ones are now so expensive. People think that their rusty old rifles are worth almost what a new on is, and that is just not so. A new Hawkins sells for $500.00-$600.00 and you can not get the big bore anymore.

You could buy that and then throw a Green Mountain Slow twist roundball barrel on it. Make a nice rifle then.

Depends on what you are looking for. For me, it would be nothing because I don't want a rusty gun or a .54 muzzy. How does the crown look on the cut job?

I'll bet I can get it for $30.00,maybe $20.00,so I guess it's worth going after then.

All of my muzzleloaders are .50 cal..I guess it would be neat to have a .54 cal.I probably would want to get a new barrel for it.I would still be making out like a bandit.

I see I can get a new barrel for it from Green Mountain for just $130.00.I gotta go see that gut tomorrow.

Semisane 12-22-2010 02:12 PM

If you can get that thing for anything under $100 and grab yourself a nice new .54 1:70 twist Green Mountain barrel you'll have a fantastic gun for $300 or less. What a Merry Christmas!

pluckit 12-22-2010 02:37 PM

Does anyone know what size the flats are on the 54?

Semisane 12-22-2010 05:10 PM

One inch for the .54 & .58. - 15/16" for the .45 & .50.

It says for Renegade and similar rifles.Does that include the Hawkins? And what does LRH stand for?Long Range Hunter? If it fits a Hawkins, that barrel would be nice.

It's says hawkens/renegades.the LRH does indeed mean long range hunter, due to the 1:28 twist.I have a old renegade .54 and was thinking on a .45 cal barrel for it,but i think i have changed my mind lol.i want that little carbine barrel for it's lighter weight.

GM gold dots and bullshops in this little carbine sound fun. the lighter weight will be appreciated also lol.i am scratching the .45 barrel and this is on my list for the old .54 rene i have had for many years.if the 21" barrel shoots anything like the 22" GMB on the wifes wolverine it should be a tack driver..
