hawkin load

i just got a hawkin and am wonder where to start with a load. is it ok to shoot blackhorn in it?

cayugad 12-11-2010 01:02 PM

No.. no BlackHorn 209. Some good powders are Pyrodex RS, Triple Seven 2f, or Goex 2f. 3f can also be used. Start your testing at 70 grains and a patched round ball.

you'll need the Hubbard mag spark 209 adapter for it. Or do like i do and use a small 5gr booster charge of jim shockeys gold.
This should help,

Why Jim Shockeys Gold? Would this work with inlines with #11 caps?

MountainDevil54 12-11-2010 02:24 PM

Yeah you could do it too with a #11 inline. I prefer JSG as its low power but sets off easily by a #11 cap.

I personally would not monkey around with BlackHorn 209 in a traditional rifle. They just plain are not made for it. Now granted Mountain Devil ignored all manufacturer's recommendations for load and went ahead and duplex loaded his rifle to get BlackHorn to ignite. But it you have to go through all of that ... what's the advantage.

Should a problem happen, you have no one to blame when you disregard the manufacturer's recommendations. Also your going into some uncharted territory there when you monkey with BlackHorn. Due yourself a favor, stick with Pyrodex RS. Its a dirty powder. So what. You have to clean the rifle anyway. You give the rifle a water bath and in no time have it all ship shape. Also, that powder will work in your rifle. There is no experimentation.

Western Powders gave me the thumbs up on the experiment.

The hubbard mag spark adapter will fire straight blackhorn and only runs $20

I do not have any Hawken's any more but I have more than a hand full of Renegades that I shoot and look at.

When i am shooting rondie events - use GOEX black powder most often - or well I did but for the last couple of years I have been shooting T7-2f at these events also.

When i am hunting with one I defenitely use T7 but in the hunting situations I shoot T7-3f because of the temperatures that we might hunt in. I also only use #11 magnum caps, there is a regular #11 that is cooler than the mag cap.

BH will work in a percussion side lock if you use the Hubbard as it uses a 209 primer... I think it is kinda clumbersome for hunting but others like it.

Duplexing to shoot BH doesnt make much sense to me as I fear detonation could happen since BH is a Nitro based smokeless powder.

Shockey's or any of the APP powders are very weak grain for grain with other powders. They also tend to grab moisture very easily. There are just better powders out there to choose from.

Cayugad is sort of my goto guy when it comes to shooting a sidelock - percussion or flint. When I need guidance I go there so I defer to anything that hem might recommend.

Seriously get him to post his directions to shooting a side hammer and the things you might want and need.

I shoot round balls, conicals, and sabots from my percussion side locks.

What Hawken did you get???

Are you hunting or target shooting???

What projectile are you planning to use???

lemoyne 12-11-2010 06:41 PM

I use Pyrodex or black its just practical. Blackhorn is a progressive type powder and for people that don't completely understand the different type powders it is safer to not duplex.
As far as 777 is concerned it can be made to work but you may have trouble with crud ring and you will have trouble with it blowing patches and probably have to use wads which is unnecessary with black or Pyrodex.
