bagged my first deer
After 3 years of hunting I got a nice 150 lb. doe last night.
Shot was 30 min before dark, 110 yds from the stand. Hit was a little lower than I'd like (only caught 1 lung), but it did the job. Shooting was a TC Impact/250 gr. SST/100 gr. Pyrodex pellets. Not much blood to track with, but the ground was soft enough to spot prints. She made it to cover and finally dropped about 80 yds from the hit. Blood trail was only 30-40 feet long. I'm really glad I didn't go looking right away. Probably would have pushed her half the night. |
Around here, 150# doe would be quite large. Hope you enjoy the meat as much as we do.

That is a nice doe... Congratulations on a great deer!!!
The biggest doe I ever saw (we weighed it) was 169 pounds whole. She was not field dressed. That doe had the longest nose I ever saw on a deer. My friend shot her in the field behind the garage at his place. He of course called friends to come and look at her and help him get her out. So she was so big we just had to know what she weighed. We pulled her back to the garage and put her on the scale. We then field dressed her and the doe weighed 132 gutted. Here is a formula I found. How accurate it is.. you be the judge. You do not get as much meat off a deer dressed and butchered as you might think. So using this formula... My friend's deer was 169 live weight. 169 x 78% = 131.8 Field Dressed 131.8 x 75% = Hanging Weight 98.85 98.85 x 75% = Edible Meat 74.1 pounds. Its amazing how much weight you loose from a deer. Later that season he shot a 237 pound buck. It was a Boone & Crockett buck. Of course you'd never guess who he called to help get that cow out of the woods... Deer Weights Live Weight X 78%= Field Dressed Weight X 75%= Hanging Weight X 75%= Edible Meat |
Dave I wish I had a Pic of the Doe a Local Tavern Owner shot about 15 years ago here, it Field Dressed at 175lbs, I saw it with my own eyes and could'nt believe it. It's head was as big as a Horses and it dwarfed a-lot of the Bucks there. It was at a local guys house that Cut up Deer and I had to go see it, also the (DEC) Department of Environmental Conservation was there taking pics and measurements, even they were amazed. It drew quite a crowd.
The Doe was shot by Louie Leone, he owned (Liberty Cafe) in Fredonia NY, the Doe was Processed by Ron Burgess in Portland NY. He was'nt in our Local Deer Contest or he'd of won a new Shotgun for the Heaviest Doe. A Winning Doe now weighs around in the high 130's and 140's if your real lucky, and those are Big Does! (BP) |

Barren does, the ones that cannot have young for whatever reason, can get real big.
