What real Black Powder?

Heading to the big city this weekend. Plan on picking up some of the real stuff. Something for the concials... seems fitting! ff or fff, both?

When I shoot conicals with real black powder, I like the FFF. But your right, get one of each and have some fun. Enjoy the smoke and the stink.

All of my muzzies are set up for conical shooting and seem to do the best with 3F. But I would also get 2f in case you have one of those oddball guns that like 2F:cool15:.

What Kind of Blackpowder Do You Get?

I have three rifles that are good shooters and each one is finicky w/powder choices. Weather where I live (humidity) also affects them and I use Swiss or German BP on drier days and American powder on the humid days as it doesn't seem to breakdown as quick. These guys are right - 3f may work for a certain conical that responds to a little higher breech pressure, but has been more normal and has a better average for my guns. Use 'em both and good luck! I tried both granulation's and found little difference one way or the other. If you can find it I would go with Swiss or Elephant over Goex, etc.

Swiss is just a great powder. Goex is a good powder also. But that Elephant... I never had a black powder that gave me the kind of problems Elephant did. We ended up making Daniel Boone powder trails in the grass and setting it off. It made a nice flame line. That filthy stuff almost made me swear off black powder until I got some Goex.

GOEX will do it all. Plus it's made in the USA and the price is right. I use 3F most of the time, but got half 3F and half 2F in the last case I bought. So far I haven't noticed much difference in accuracy in any of the guns I tried both in, but haven't really tried side-by-side comparisons. The 3F does seem to be a little cleaner burning though.

It's been quite a while since I used any brand of real BP.Sorry to hear Elephants quality has dropped.

Me thinks that Elephant is totally off the US market. i used Elephant stuff to blow stumps. Read somewhwere that Elephant is now being sold as Scheutzen powder.
