more fun, but with conicals

Took the wifes SUV in for service at the local garage, owned by an old school chum. Can't imagine how, but the conversation turned to hunting, shooting and to muzzleloading. Turns out he casts his own bullets. Next thing, he's telling me "answer the phone while he runs home'. Returns with 99 (not 100 ) home cast conicals. Pure lead I understand. Try these he says... if you like them I'll give you more. ( apparently his retired father loves making them!)

So, these are roughly 400gr, pure lead, no lube, no over powder card...loaded REAL easy!

I started conservatively: 60, 65, 70 and 75gr BH209 with WIN w209 primes.

I didn't make any height adjustments, because I'm sited in for the Barnes 250gr TEZ's.

Almost forgot... range was 50 yards

Looks like a winner johnnyo.

Did you actually shoot them with no lube and no over powder card? If that was the case you got fantastic results. Can you post a picture of the bullets and/or find out what mold they came out of?

Also, go beg that guy for a lifetime supply (or see if you can steal the mold). :s2:

That is some good shooting... those conical bullets will get the job done.

Yes, to, no lube and no over powder card. He gave me a few cards, but thought I'd try them another time...I'll work on the photos of the bullets and more info about the mold.

As for the supply, he was given 500 lb's of lead, removed from sailboat keels!

That's what I was thinking! What would be a respectable site in range?

I have shot heavy conicals before with no lube and no wads with great results. Heck when I first started casting conicals I did not lube them. Never had a problem. Not even with leading. Maybe I was just lucky?? Tom.

My first experience with concicals so... a lot of luck involved. They loaded really easy. I thought they'd be all over the map. I did seat them hard over the BH209 and I removed the starting Jag I used for the Barnes. Seemed to damaging the head of the bullet. Loaded with the flat end of the ramrod, instead.

If the bullets have a groove for lube, I would use some.

I've sighted in my guns for about 2" high at 50 with 100 gr loose pyrodex. I'm guessing your 75 gr load of BH 209 is about the same velocity.

Those conicals will put a serious hurt in anything out to 100 yds or more.
