BP and subs are not meant to be measured by weight. They are most consistent when measured by volume. I use an extendable brass measure, and that is all for measuring loads. That is the only one I use.
Case in point - my dad speedloaders have measurements on them. With 90 grains from his measure, its about 110 grains in those speed loaders! It is possible to get an average of a volume measured load, weigh 10, average them, and then weigh from there. IMO its just a waste of time. These guns are hunting guns. Not BR guns. with 100 grains of powder, who cares if you are off by one, maybe even 2 grains, as long as the measure is loaded to the same mark all the time, its all the same for reasonableness's sake. You only need minute of deer chest accuracy (2 inches at 100 should do fine). Getting anal about it is not worth it in a ML IMO. Consistency in measuring, loading, loading pressure, stance, how you hold your sight, etc, etc, will have more of an effect on accuracy than being exact on the powder charge. May as well weigh every bullet, sabot, primer, patch, etc if you are going through that much trouble. Later, Marcial |

Can anyone recommend a range rod? I use Dewey rods in my centerfire rifles, I don't know if they make anything for bp. Weighing powder charges... a few/lot of folks do weigh their powder loads, and you have discussed the proper way to do it. BP and the BP subs are engineered for volume measure and it would normally take +/- 5 grains or more to really notice any difference in what they are doing. You will get that same difference just by how much compression you put on the load as it rests on the powder. I tried weighing for awhile, heck I had all the equipment for reloading so it was not that big of thing. I know longer weigh - I throw and i try very hard to throw consistent loads - I really do not see a big difference. Now if you are using 'black gold' (BH) you certainly can not afford to waste any of that stuff so you might weigh it.... I still throw it but I catch all the cast-off in another container... |

More my fault than anyone else as I mentioned to Grouse about your post knowing that you really ment the 'crown'. Grouse - no elk this morning - just a couple of Moose... |

There is a great MZ supply shop called "Cain's". It is in WV. The guy has a fantastic range rod. It is recommended by many. He will make it custom to your rifle for you. He is reasonably priced and very informative to talk to. I have been to his shop a couple of times(a long drive), and called several more. I was always 100% satisfied with my decision.
I brought up weighing powder earlier in this thread. As I said earlier the biggest problem in weighing is the MC of powder changes, and that will affect how much powder you "actually get". I have not worked with BH 209 as stated earlier. If it is not affected by moisture then weighing those charges would work great. I just do not know about the moisture. Does anyone here actually know if BH is hygroscopic?? There are easy ways to measure by volume in a very consistent manner. It takes a little practice, and you have to do it exactly the same way every time. Heck I use the Lee dippers for putting powder in revolver cartridges. I can dip volume as accurately as I can measure it. It just takes time to learn. Look up "Cain's MZ" on the internet, and look at his range rods. Tom. |

If you can wait a month or maybe less - there is going to be a brand new range rod made available. It is specifically designed for muzzleloading and is a full featured Range Rod. When it comes available you will see and hear about here and other places... if you can wait & hang on - I think it is worth it.
