300gr Ballistic Tip Thor's

Got some of the new ballistic tip thors in the mail today. These are packaged in 14 qty. Im not sure if Thor is going to repackage in 15 or not but i plan on asking about that.

.500" Thor is what all of my rifles "inlines" take so thats what i got.

Started at only 50 yards to check the scope out and see how they grouped.

100gr BH209 - CCI 209M - CVA Accura.

3 shot group,

Bullets musta exploded on the paper :D

cayugad 08-30-2010 02:59 PM

that is some real fine shooting there. That sure looks like they will do the job.

mountaineer magic 08-30-2010 03:08 PM

Accuracy looks excellent but penetration is pretty pathetic. They went through the paper but not the cardboard the paper is taped to.:D:D

MountainDevil54 08-30-2010 03:12 PM

har har. That was just a back board to take a pic on. Have to do some more targets later. I first started with the 360gr Minie.

deer655 08-30-2010 03:58 PM

Good shooting. I may give them a try one day.

I agree, they don't look like they are stabilizing at all????

MountainDevil54 08-30-2010 04:50 PM

When i was taking pictures i noticed the hollow base seemed a bit deeper than the 300gr HP's i shot previously. I will have to measure that and see if it is or not.

50calty 08-30-2010 06:01 PM

SO when do they go up for sale?

lemoyne 08-30-2010 06:04 PM

I can handle the price on BH but every one has a point at which they feel its getting ridiculous and the Thor is beyond mine. They are an excellent bullet but way over priced.

MountainDevil54 08-30-2010 06:06 PM

hornady fpb runs the same price here as the Thors. Powerbelts are more expensive.

SteveBNy 08-30-2010 07:01 PM

No Excuse's are $.60 ea.
Bullshops are less yet.
Both do everthing a $1 plus ea conical will.

MountainDevil54 08-30-2010 07:10 PM

Thats nice, never tried no excuses, just bull shops. I think those were 25 cents each

MountainDevil54 09-10-2010 05:58 PM

Got out to 100 yards today. 100gr Blackhorn209 is the deal.

90gr gave me a 3 1/2" groups - 110gr gave me a 2" group.

My third shot is the highest in the picture, the barrel was really warm to the touch and i believe thats what caused it to walk up. Need more primers again. Damn things never last long.

So far everything looks good. If i get to hunt this year, i will use this set up.

Need to get some new back boards for the targets as well

cayugad 09-10-2010 06:11 PM

Well that sure looks like a good load.. nice shooting.

MountainDevil54 09-10-2010 06:47 PM

Thanks.

I forgot to mention that the orange dot is 1.5"

MountainDevil54 09-13-2010 06:51 PM

Tested a couple of the New 300gr Thor BT's today at 50 yards. 100gr BH209, cci 209m primers, 3 gallons of water. The black jug caught it as you will see in the movie.

I believe the bullets look like this due to the upward angle i am shooting. Both bullets came out the same so i am betting thats what it is. No weight loss other than the 3gr ballistic tip.

Once i get news paper/ phone books i plan on testing them out as far as 200 yards.
Take note of finger/bullet starter ;)

that kind of expansion would have made one ugly wound channel.. nice shooting.

Spent 30 minutes trying to get my RCBS Chronomaster to work. Called the company and they said to just pack it up and send it in. Tried 3 new 9v batteries and nothing! My brother went and hooked it up to an adapter and it turned on. Found a 9v in my truck from bow season and it finally worked! Boy was i upset at first

CVA Accura, 300gr ballistic tip Thor, 100gr Volume BH209, Standard CCI 209 Primers. Barrel was allowed to cool down until it actually felt cool to the touch.

1836
1835
1825

Avg Velocity of 1832 FPS.

295gr Powerbelts, 100gr BH209, Std CCI primers.
1794
1794
1794

I found this really odd so i loaded another Powerbelt and put a great deal of pressure when i seated it and it "shot" up to 1820 FPS

245gr Powerbelts 100gr BH209
1865
1865
1862

One shot tests just for fun.

245gr Powerbelt 90gr BH209 was 1784 FPS
295gr Powerbelt 90gr BH209 was 1702 FPS

Sadly though i am going have to set the rifles to the side for a couple weeks. My shoulder muscle has inflamed again and has left me with golf ball sized knots between my shoulder blade and spine

The Skirt on the Thor's seals that bore up pretty tight it seems. 100gr BH209 is the most accurate in the Accura so i wont test below or above my 100gr charge.

pluckit 09-15-2010 01:44 PM

I would know your shooting anywhere 54.

pluckit 09-15-2010 01:46 PM

I have to say I'm very unhappy with that site and what the moderator did to Ronn.

I must say, i got Ronn's PM and that was total crap what happened. I wish he wouldnt leave as he had been a good member to chat with and bumps heads against. He seemed like a good guy too, hell he gave me that Hunterbolt that i now love.
