Pistol update

Hope you all remember this from a couple weeks ago. The owner and i decided on an Antique/ rough used look for it. The stock turned out real pretty and the barrel i love!

I used birchwood casey rusty walnut stain 4 coats total, Tru oil and then the birchwood casey conditioner to buff down the gloss finish.

Before,

6 coats of tru oil, hand rubbed.

Complete and buffed,

Tomorrow i will take better pictures of it. The barrel came out awesome. I wrapped it with thin string and soaked the string with bleach, let it rust and then took all the string off, soaked a towel in bleach and wrapped the barrel up in it. I followed up with oiled 0000 steel wool then gave it a good soapy bath and a baking soda bath before 3 coats of Gun Shield went on the barrel.

I liked it better at a high gloss. After all its not like we are going to carry the thing around. But it does look nice both ways. You do very good work.

I agree with cayugad on the high gloss. But it looks great, really like the barrel.

I kinda favor the finished product over the high gloss. Great job.

Okay guys i got better pictures this evening. I was VERY careful when i put it on the rock LOL. I actually had to file a half **** "safety" notch into the tumbler as it did not have one.

But i like the finish, it came out really smooth and the curly maple looks really good.

On the brass i just hit it with some 220 grit and left it rough. We agree'd on an antique finish and what i like about the side lock plate, it still has some casting marks that when i "polished" it, it made it look like it had engraved scenery at some point.

Barrel finish,

That looks real good. A one of a kind pistol. Good job!

that is sweet as crap.. . I would love to build two myself to hang over the mantle. How did you do the barrel? That is really nice..

MountainDevil54 08-27-2010 05:06 AM

used 100 grit sand paper wrapped around a file, followed up with 220 grit. Cleaned it off and then used thin string, wrapped the barrel up in it, poured bleach onto the string and let it soak for half an hour. Removed the string and used a rag soaked in bleach and wrapped the barrel up to darken the rest of the barrel evenly. Let it sit over night and then used hot soapy water and washed the barrel down. Let it dry and then used 3 coats of Gun Shield to protect against rust

Are you going to shoot that rascal or just look at it?

MountainDevil54 08-27-2010 06:37 AM

lol just look at it until i can find a box to send it back to the owner.

Any clue what size of balls this .44 takes? I'd imagine you'd have to use a patch with this one. The only .44 i had was a 1851 navy and i used a .451 ball that shaved lead off when you'd seat it in the cylinder.
