Lyman Trade Rifle .50 caliber

At Mid South Shooters Supply I was shopping for projectiles and stuff. I then saw that they had barrels for my Lyman Trade Rifle for under $100.00. I sat and thought about a .50 caliber flintlock for that rifle. I have a .54 but would like something else to play with. So I bought one of them and a ton of other stuff. No wonder they love me.

It came today and it fits my rifle perfect..

Now I have to watch the gun adds and see if I can pick up a stock and lock. The rifle came with a new tang. So maybe I can build another rifle out of it and it can sit next to its big brother..

I think Cay needs to build a "walk-in" gun safe.

Well, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!

Well I knew it was windy and late in the afternoon, but a quick ten shots never hurt anyone. So I hauled the new .50 caliber outside.

Rifle: Lyman Trade Rifle Flintlock .50 caliber
Powder : Goex 3f 70 grains
Projectile: .490 home cast roundball with .018 pillow tick moose milk lube
Distance: 25 yards (range finder)
Weather: 72º sunny, windy blue sky
Sights: non adjustable old style iron sights

I loaded the rifle and forgot what a great trigger the Lyman Trade Rifle has and it surprised me with a slight hangfire. Shot number one so noted.

After being surprised by the first one, I hunkered down and shot nine more rounds. Over all I was surprised by the way this rifle shot. The lock worked flawless.

WHOPEEE! Ya got a good one for sure. Are those barrel 1:48" twist?

Nice shooting Dave. I think that most of that nasty hot and humid weather is past us.

:s2: NOT EVEN CLOSE! :s8: Took three guns to the hunting camp last week-end and didn't even take them out of the truck. Temp = 92*, heat index 106. Fixed an oil seal on the tractor PTO, disked two small food plots, and gave up for the weekend. TOO DARN HOT!

Yes, both the .50 & .54 are 1-48 twist. I personally like that twist. Now granted if I were shooting roundball all the time at long distances, then the 1-66 or 1-70 would be my choice without a doubt. But for the kind of hunting I do, that 1-48 works just fine.

As for weather, yes a lot of the heat is past us. Maybe these insane high temps will stay away. We hit 53º last night and they are talking 48º tonight or tomorrow night. Now that's good sleeping weather. I had the fans in the windows last night and got the house down to 59º this morning. Had to wear a insulated shirt in the house but it felt good to be a little cold again.

Well I took the .50 caliber Lyman Trade Rifle out today and had the target at... 49,50,48 yards, according to my range finder. So I called it 50 yards.

Its amazing how small that red inner bulls eye looks at 50 yards. No wonder I like scopes. This Lyman Trade Rifle has primitive sights, but I really like them for some reason.

That low hit was intentional. I wanted to see if I could shoot under the group in to at least the inner circle, so I aimed low.

I then decided to try and foul the rifle out. But after shooting 25 round balls I was not able to. So I ended the shooting session.

I was shooting 85 grains of Goex 3f. I had a .018 pillow tick patch and used moose milk as the lube. These were home cast .490 roundball. And I used 4f as the primer. At no time did I swab the bore of this rifle. I just kept shooting and shooting. Now granted I did swab off the flint, and the frizzen. But the rifle behaved and shot perfect again.

This rifle is ready to hunt. Any of them shots at that distance would have been in the kill zone of a whitetail. The ball hits exactly on top of the front sight.

Fine shooting Cayugad. My Great Plains is the same way with olive oil lubed patches. It shoots without swabbing for as long as you can last. But I don't own any 4F. Always use 3F in the pan. This time of the year I have to wipe the pan after every shot or I get black soup from the fouling.

Did you have any "klatch/no poofs" or flashes in the pan?

flounder33 08-19-2010 06:04 PM

That is very nice with those open sights.

looks like a good shooting barrel, which one would I get to fit my old Cabelas Hawkins? Isn't it the same as the trade rifle?

That I can not say. I know the Green Mountain Barrel fits the T/C Hawkins/Renegades and it fits the Trade rifle. I am not sure if it fits the Cabela's Hawkins. Before I purchase one, I would call Lyman and ask them if that barrel would fit the Cabela's Investarms Hawkins. I would like to say it does, but I would hate to see you get stuck with a barrel. I am guessing that the 15/16th would be the one you want.
