Triple 7 vs. Shockey Gold

Spent a couple of hours Saturday sighting in the scope I had remounted on my T/C Encore 209x50. Started with some Shockey Gold that I had left over. Got good groups soon with little effort, then decided to chronograph the load. I was using 120 gr. (by volume) with a 300 gr. BT bullet with sabots from Precision which I had used before with good results in my gun. The load only chronographed about 1500 fps. I decided to try an equal load of Triple 7 and got velocities of about 1920 fps! My groups printed about 2 inches higher at 100 yards with the Triple 7, but still got good groups. With just some scope adjustment for elevation, I soon had the gun shooting right where I wanted it in preparation for an Arizona muzzleloader hunt for elk that I have drawn in Area 22 South in late September. The Shockey Gold produced significantly less fouling as advertised, but for a hunt where I may have shots in excess of 200 yards, I am not going to sacrifice 400+ fps and a flatter trajectory for some cleaning or reloading convenience!

That's pretty typical of my experience with JSG vs. T7 Doc. JSG has it's uses for me (plinking & playing) but the price is too high for what it is. However, I'll buy every canister I can get if I find a really good sale.

:s8: That is a 25 percent deficiency and that's what I had to when I used it and besides that I had several cans that would not group, brand new cans now I do not trust the stuff, besides being anemic some is just plain bad. :s8:

Serious violation to be admitting publicly - possibly even a felony.

At the range a week ago a young fella was trying to shoot in a MZ with JS Gold. The powder didn't burn completely, looked like a dying roman candle. Bullets all over the paper. After about 10 shots, I took pity on him and let him try some 777. Instant change in performance. He threw out the JSG and headed for Wal-Mart for some 777. Heard of others not happy with JSG. Me-I'm sticking to 777.

So Iam not the only one thats wasted money on a bad can. They had so many complaints the local sport store quit stocking it.
Of course he stocks 777 and Blackhorn as well as Pyrodex so we have all we need.

U-all

If you are going to shoot APP/JSG at the reduced velocity that it works at why not just shoot GOEX, it even provides a little more velocity and does not absorb the moisture as does the APP powders what ever name they go by. With GOEX you will at least get a boom every time if you protect the load. With the APP's it is questionable right out of the jug!

I bought a jug of JSG-3f last summer - never opened it. Thought I might use it for shooting PRB's @ Rhondies but opted for T7 instead. Opened the jug early in January it was all big chunks in the bottle. Guess I could have stirred it up and broke it up - probably even got most of it to shoot... but it just raised to many questions. Should have saved it for a fizzy for the 4th of July - dang!

i do not shoot Goex for the same reason i stopped using 777; the stuff is dirty: Swabbing the bore after every shot is not my cup of tea; neither is a crud ring. Over the years i've used a lot of JSG and never got a bad can of the stuff. Some of my best 100 yard groups were fired using JSG. Two of my longest shots on game animals were made with JSG; 170 and 192 laser transit measured yards.
