Sabots for .429 Bullets...
Ok guys, now let's talk sabots...I'm going to try .429 bullets later this month...I have the prepacked Hornady .429s in 240 and 300gr...
My rifle is a Knight Disc with a 22 inch barrel, powder will be Goex FFF and I prefer charges between 90-110grs, depending upon how the rifle groups... A couple of questions??? What sabot does Hornady use in their products??? They look like MMP, but I'm not sure, are they marked on the base or somewhere??? Also, I'm going to order some Speer 270 gr soft points in the Gold Dots to try as well...MMP has 2 different sabots avaliable as well as Harvester...I'm thinking about ordering the MMP green sabots but MidWay also has these prepacked by Hornady...Anyone know what sabots these will be??? My thinking is, since it is a Knight, which usually have larger bores than T/C and I believe in cleaning between shots then I don't need the Crush rib sabots??? Which would you order??? |

I have a little custom 200gr spirepoint .429 VERY hardcast that shoots good with the smooth but i cant break 1 3/4" with the CRs. Granted, i am pushing them pretty hard for a light bullet. Honestly i havent used many MMP 50x429 sabots so im not qualified to answer how well they compare to the Harvesters. My Knights have been ok with the few 300gr .429s and CrushRibs and i would like to try the 265gr Interlock from Hornady in the CR sabot. A longer bullet bearing surface in contact with the sabot can make a difference too. My CVAs prefers the Harvester green smooth by far with most bullets but i havent tested that many. When in doubt call Del at MMP. He is a great guy and very willing to answer questions and offer advice. He hasnt even bashed Harvester in my talks with him and has a very open mind and excellent way of expressing his opinions. Ron (on this board) uses the .429s more than most people i know of on 2 forums and im sure his advice would be helpful also. The GoldDot 270 should be a good bullet IMO but you might want to get some 260gr Partitions from Wideners before they are gone for good. www.wideners.com and they are about $22 per 50 for a true premium bullet that almost cant fail under any condition. They will hold 2/3rds of their weight under almost any situation. http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.c...id=527&dir=278 |
On an average most Knights have a .500 or +barrel there for Crush Ribs and the other sabots made for tight barrels do not work well in them. The standard size 50/44 will.
Not as many people use the thick wall sabots because before the better plastic came out we had trouble getting them to shoot good and a lot of people developed a preference for 50/45. The 50/44 and the 50/40 do real well with the new plastic. If you need to tell the difference between MMP and Harvester sabots look at the inside of the base MMP has a step Harvester has a smooth angle they are both excellent sabots and I try both and use the one the gun shows a preference for. |
Thanks lemoyne, looks like the Hornady prepackaged bullets I bought came with the Harvester sabots...

Yep, I've bought from them and Harvester, just trying to see what other Knight users have used in their rifles with these bullet... |
In some of my Knights I have had good luck with the Knight 44/50 sabots. I am quite sure they are made by MMP. They measure arround .5065 or .507 and work good in oversize bores.

I just got in from shooting her tonight...I took 4 shots at 100 yards with 100grs of Goex FFF with both the 240 Hornady and the 300 Hornady...Groups were terrible...
I dropped down to 90grs and shot 2 shots touching with the 300gr bullets...It's funny, this Knight likes heavy bullets and lower powder charges...I might order some of the MMP high pressure sabots and see if I can bump the powder up a tad... I also need to try the 240s at 90grs...I'm just glad the temp dropped down to 85 so I felt like shooting a bit... |
The Harvester .44 caliber crush ribs (P/N: H5044G) work very well in my Encore and Black Diamond guns. They are very accurate when used with the 240 grain XTP and 300 grain XTP Hornady .430 bullets. Those same crushed rib sabots come with the Harvester .44 caliber 280 grain hard cast bullets.
My CVA guns like a tighter fitting sabot than the .44 caliber crush rib. BTW: That Harvester 280 grain .44 caliber flat nosed hard cast bullet will go through both shoulders of a 300 pound+ wild boar. They are cheap too: $7.59 for 20 at Grafs. :happy0001: |
