Original Knight Disc testing the Lehigh Gen II plug
Sabotloader helped me convert my Original Disc over to a Generation II Lehigh set up that shoots only the 209 primers. Meaning no more plastic primer jackets. But that is not all. The amount of fouling has been reduced by at least 90%. I still get a crud ring when I shoot Triple Seven powder, but even that is not as bad as it used to be. One reason I never shot Triple Seven out of the rifle. It was a Pyrodex RS baby.
I first tested the rifle at 25 yards and it was shooting just over the top of the bull. The three shot group looked like a hole. So I was very pleased. That was with some 240 grain Hornady XTPs in .452. So I went to a new target. (besides the old one was full of holes from the other day) I moved that back to 100 yards. This is a real switch for me shooting this far. I then shot the 200 grain Lehigh 50/40 hollow points with blue MMP sabots. The 110 grains worked Saturday for me so we tried it again today. I was kind of surprised that the group was not higher. So I shot two more without swabbing the barrel. Without swabbing opened up the group a great deal. So I do know it shoots a little high with the 200 grain Lehigh, but swabbing is a must. Shots 6-9 are what I normally shoot out of the rifle. They are a .430 Hornady 300 grain XTP. I use the green harvester crushed rib sabots. I was swabbing between shots. #7 made no sense to me, as I thought I had it all together. But over all that is a very good 100 yard group for me. Shots 10-12 were some 375 grain Buffalo Bullet SSB with only 80 grains of powder. They were in the shooting box for some reason and I decided to give them a try. Again, not the best group, but not the worst I have ever done. Over all I shot 15 times today. When I broke the rifle down, again... very little fouling on the floor of the breech. The bolt has some carbon as did the Lehigh insert. The shocker again was the breech plug. No fouling in the threads. So when I assembled it again, I greased the teflon tape to see if that was what used to cause the mess. Other then the 209 tunnel having a small bit of fouling which a Q-tip took care of, the end of the breech plug was not all that dirty. Although... the barrel shooting Triple Seven was filthy for some reason. When they say T-7 is a clean powder.. It might be, but I sure put some patches through it today to get it clean. It was 80 degrees out and humid. That might have had something to do with it. Over all this is a real nice rifle. The addition of the Lehigh breech plug and conversion has made this a rifle that will be seeing a lot more range time in the future. It is fun to shoot. |
Im happy with it in all my DISC based guns.
In the 54 and 50 ignition is very good but the 45 seems massively improved. So much that sabots using 100gr of BH209 look as stressed as 110gr with the FPJ setup. The vent liner pocket is larger than the bore so something might be going on.....kinda like a bottle neck cartridge. Shoots great though. :D Ive never tried any T7 powder in mine yet but its on the to do list. I want to see if the bore shine and the ME bore condition have made a difference. Its made cleaning up BH209 a little easier. |
