Barrel clogged
 

I was cleaning my CVA Plainsman, and the jag popped off the end of my cleaning rod while wrapped in a piece of old t-shirt. Long story short, now I have a thick chunk of t-shirt and plastic severly crammed into the chamber end of my barrel, and can't get it out. I was able to use a cut down valve stem from an old tire, and screw it into the hole in the barrel where the gas from the nipple would flow in (I don't know the name of that hole, or the part that the nipple screws into) and used an air compressor on it, but to no avail. I was actually able to get up to ~70 psi. I've seen people mention putting a cap on and firing it to clear obstructions, but this is wedged pretty tight. I'm new to BP, and I'm nervous about doing that. does anyone have any tricks to get something like that out? Can one simply remove the breach plug?

I would not pull the breech plug. All you might do is damage the rifle. Is it dry down in the breech? If it is, you can shoot the thing out. Remove the nipple and pack powder down through the nipple drum. Then put the nipple back on, cap it and shoot it out.

Something to keep in mind... always be sure that the jag is down the barrel as far as it will go. If that jag was mid way up, it would be a barrel obstruction. So after you pack that drum, then be sure to seat that cleaning jag down in the breech.

I have shot stuck jags out of rifles. If you pack that drum full, it will shoot it out normally the first time. But remember if it doesn't, and you want to try again, you have to AGAIN, be sure that jag is pressed down as far as you can into the barrel.

They also sell a CO2 barrel cleaner. It will blow about anything out the bore that is down there. I am guessing the reason the air compressor did not work is because air escaped around the jag.

Get a range rod for the next time you clean. That is a common ailment of the rods that come with the rifles. They come off. I have had it happen and shot out the jag. Remember, when you pack that drum, it will shoot that jag a long distance. So if you aim at the ground to recover your jag, put a box or something behind the area you are going to aim, in case the thing bounces.

Be sure that your nipple port into the barrel is behind whats stuck. I had one in the shop one time that the chamber went passed the nipple port and had to pull the breach plug to get it out. If the port is behind the stuck object the procedure Cayugad outlined using powder works best.
