Has anyone here tried this? I remember hearing about Black Mag years ago, and then they sort of disappeared. I saw their add in a hunting magazine yesterday- I guess it's supposed to be a new and improved formula.

Kinda pricey though- $30 for a 10 oz jug, just like BH209. You can order it from their website, but I haven't seen it in any stores yet. From what I can tell, the only advantage it has over BH209 is that it can be used in rifles that won't shoot BH209 - sidelocks, inlines with the non-BH209 compatible breech plugs, etc.... What do ya'll think?

I talked to the guys at western powder about that. They said from what they heard that was the way to go for sidelocks. I guess we will just have to wait and see. But your right its like BH209 for sidelocks. Which would be pretty sweet if it truly delievers.

Rumor is that Alliant is picking it up and renaming it "BlackDot".

MDM didnt have the marketing needed like the big boys but now they might.

Its a much finer grind then BH209.
Volume measurements are heavier, so you get far fewer shots from a cannister.

The conversion chart i saw shows it to be just a tiny bit heavier than real black powder.

So yes by comparison, it is very expensive atm.

Black Mag is a very powerful powder. Unfortunately, no Black Mag powder has ever readily available.

I bought some last year and my initial reaction was very positive. My knight liked it and i got pretty accuracy using it. I'm more of a hunter then shooter so when I went for a reload it had formed a pretty good clump in my reload tubes. If you shake it it will crumble pretty easily but I never want to have tell a deer I just missed to hold still while I shake a reload tube. I would pick up what looked like frost in the last 2 to 3 inches in my barrel after about 6-7 shots. My reload would easily break thru the frost looking substance in the barrel so it was'nt a problem. My gun cleaned up very easily after shooting. I have 3 bottles that I bought last year that have never been opened but I can tell the powder is basically in a big clump. Like I said it breaks up easy enough. I may go back one day to it but I'm back with t7 for now.If you really want to try it then let me know and I will make you a great deal on 2 and 1/4 bottles.

This is a 5 part comparison of 777, BH 209, and Black Mag XP. Part three discusses cost. For a 110 gr load, BH costs 53.5 cents/shot and Black Mag costs 77.5 cents/shot. Black Mag would have to be REALLY better to command that price especially since it is so hard to get ahold of.

The articles make for some interesting reading. Also pretty obviously slanted toward BH 209, it does give some great info.
