Green Mountain LRH barrels

What do you guys think about the GM-LRH barrels?? I have a TC Renegade just sitting in the safe. I have not shot it in years. It was my fathers MZ, and he left it to me. I would like to hunt with it a little. But I was thinking about putting an LRH on it and setting it up with a tang sight like the one that was in a thread not too long ago. So what do you guys think about the LRH?? How is the front sight attached?? Is it grooved?? Tom.

I have 4 of these barrels. Two 50's that are stainless and 1-28 twist, a .458 with a 1-18 twist and it is 32" long. And the last one is a 45 stainless steel 1-28. They are fantastic barrles. I bet that the thread you saw was one of my guns. They have Lyman 57 SML peeps and Lyman 17 AML globe front sights. Ron

Actually the one I saw had a tang sight on the rifle. I think it was Semi?? But I do not remember. But I have been thinking about it. Tom.

These are my rifles with the GM barrles. Ron

Those look like shooters. I have a few peep sights on some of my rifles also. I really like them. But I am looking for a rock chunkin rifle out to about 300 yards. I think a mid range vernier would work perfectly for that. Tom.

I have a lot of Green Mountain Barrels. I had a .62 smoothbore that I sold. I have a .58 1-70 twist, .54 caliber 1-70 twist, (2) 1-28 twist stainless steel .50 calibers, a 21 inch 1-28 flintlock barrel and a .45 caliber 1-28 twist stainless steel barrel.

They are very good shooters all of them. I do not have a peep sight as I dislike them. I normally mount a 1x scope on them.

The Lyman 57 SML will o out to 300 yards no problem. Ron

How does that 1 in 18 inch twist .458 shoot?

idahoron 04-24-2010 04:35 PM

It shoots very well. I would say that on the average it shoots sub 2" groups. I have shot much better than that but I would say that 2" is average. I have is sighted in out to 300 yards. Ron

Isn't your LRH barrel a 1/28 twist. My three are that anyway....

Here is a target from one of the LRH's but I am using a regular TC open fiber optic sight...

I shoot the same powder load with a .458/300 grain Nosler Protected point and an MMP .457-.458/50 Orange sabot..

HEAD0001 04-25-2010 03:42 PM

Where did you get the .458 iin18 barrel at?? I idd not see them on the GM website. But I like the sounds of that. I could easily use my 45-70 molds for that one. It sounds lke a winner.

Does it just drop into the TC Renegade with no fitting?? If so then I think I will be ordering one this week.

I just sent GM a request for a 1-18 twist barrel. Hopefully they will get back with me. Tom.

That barrel was a limited run and I got it from Green Mountain. I heard that a bunch of long range shooters were begging them to make a 1" barrel that was 32" long, and 1-18 twist. I have used 475 gr Lyman whitworth bullets in it and they shot good. Now I use the Lee 459-405-HB for that gun and I paper patch them and size them to fit the barrel. I went with a little smaller bullet because this rifle was built for an antelope rifle.
I don't know how many they made but they are sold out, you might keep your eyes open and find one. I know there was one pop up on Monster Mulies for sale about a year ago. Green Mountain does have some 1-28 twist Stainless Steel 45's but the bore is more in the .451 range, I got mine for 110 dollars. Ron

I would prefer blue. but I would take SS or blue. I e-mailed Green Mountain. Maybe they can tell me where to get one. I think that would be a great barrel. If you see one anywhere would you please tell me. I am not in a big hurry, so I can look around for awhile. I just really like the idea of the 1in18, and being able to use all my 45-70 molds is a real plus. I wanted to buy a paper patch mold for my 45-70, so this could work out perfectly. I am assuming you are sizing your paper patched bullet to .457?? Thanks, Tom.

Ron take a look at that rifle on the SemiSane thread I just bumped to the top. What do you think of that rifle?? Tom.

idahoron 04-25-2010 04:36 PM

I sized them .457, .454, and .451 and the best luck I had was with them sized to .451. I have only used one 45-70 bullet so far. Ron

I saw that one. I like the idea of the vernier tang sight for long range target. I would recomend that he try the same front sight I have on my 458. It is a Lee Shavers globe sight with a level. That thing rocks for keeping your gun lined up right. If a guy wants to go out to 300 yards the Lyman 57 will do that. If a guy is using a rifle like my .458 I would need a vernier tang sight to get to 300 yards with a 450 + grain bullet. The Lee shavers sight comes with several different cards including the fine pin which is what I use. It also has a crosshair that I like a lot too. Ron

Yes my 50 cal's are 1-28 twist. One of my 45's is a 1-18 twist and the last one is a Stainless 45 1-28 twist.
