Recovering Bullets - Test

I would to see how my bullet of choice will hold together on impact. ( on deer ) Can anyone suggest a simulation which would allow me to test this? I've heard shooting in to a bucket of sand. Any thoughts on this?

It's the Harvester 300 grn Scorpion PT Gold by the way.

Thanks,

bucket of sand works good. I like to use a cement like mixture. Soaking wet news paper is also great but its hard to catch the bullets in it. I used 16" of soaking wet news paper tightly compacted into a plastic tube and a 348gr powerbelt zipped right through it like a hot knife through butter.

Thanks MTdevel. Will a five gallon bucket hold a round?

yep it will do perfectly. It only takes about 7" sand to stop the bullet. I used to use 5lb coffee cans to catch bullets.

I did a test a while back with a bucket of sand. I have tested roundballs and Hornady Great Plains.

Depending on the weight of the bullet, I would use multiple stacks of bound newspaper first soaked in a drum of water which total 36 - 48 inches if you can find enough of them. Lay them end to end and then shoot into the stack lengthwise.
