First ML-CVA Buckhorn
 

Just sent out the payment for my first muzzleloader. I got a 1 year old CVA Buckhorn for $80 shipped to my door. Just curious as too what loads these like. Any help is appreciated.

I would start with no more than 80 grns of whatever propellant you want to use and see how she shoots. There's really no reason to use more it the gun groups well with a lighter load. Good luck with it and welcome to the BP addiction. Oh yeah, don't forget to clean it well after each day at the range or you will have problems.

I'll give triple seven a try as far as powder goes. Anyone use the powerbelts? or should I just look into sabots?

80 grains is a good start, and yes the rifle will shoot powerbelts. I personally shoot a 300 grains XTP out of my staghorn magnum which is what the buckhorn replaced. Same rifle as the stagborn with an extra locking lug and a nice stock.

Mine shoots best with 90 grains of Pyrodex RS or black powder, but Triple Seven should work well. Swab between shots and clean it good at the end of the day and that rifle will serve you well for many years.

X2 on what Dave said. I also have the Staghorn and Staghorn Mag and what Dave recommended is what worked for me too.
The only difference is I used a 240gr XTP Mag.

I guess I havent thought about what else I need. They guy said the ram rod is broken, so I will need a new one. What else do I need?

Congrats on the Buckhorn. Go to cva.com and click on blackpowder101 it contains a lot of basic info. I just bought my first ml and bp 101 has helped me out quit a bit. Also you can get owners manuals from the CVA site. You might want to check with meijers that same kit is $13.95.
Thats all the info I have but follow the advice and suggestion you get from this forum and you can't go wrong.

I'm torn whether to shoot sabots or powerbelts. I've heard mixed reviews on both. Would love to hear some opinions on both.

Adam, call CVA 1-770-449-4687 and tell them your (Ram-Rod) is broken, they will replace it Free of charge under CVA's Lifetime Warranty.
