Now you will REALLY think I'm nutz

I was looking at my g series whitetail while I was firing up the stove in the shop this morning. I put a little piece of plastic tubing over the nipple and took some fake shots. Then I thought " I wonder how a musket cap would fit over that tubing?"
I tried one and it fit perfect.
This afternoon I cut the tubing so it was a little less than flush with the end of the nipple and did some shooting. I shot 14 shots and had perfect ignition every time. I was wondering if the plastic would melt at all but no problem there.
So, just in case anybody wants to use musket caps with a #11 nipple, this is one way.

Neat Flounder. Now for guys that think musket caps may be the cure for an ignition problem, that would be an interesting and inexpensive way to try them out.

That is interesting.. by plastic tubing.. do you mean like fish tank clear plastic? Did the G series fire off each time with no problems? It might be something to look into.

As as for your claim of thinking your nutz... do you really want me to answer that?:confused0024:

Might have to give that a try with my G-series Whitetail, but its never given me any problems with ignition using #11 caps. That white is one fine rifle.

yes it was like fish tank tubing. I think it was 3/16 inch O.D. and 1/8 inch I.D..

I have a bunch of that and a bunch of musket caps... Although I have a breech plug around here for musket caps that will fit the G series because I believe most White breech plugs are interchangeable. When I purchased my Model 97 Ultra Mag it came with breech plugs for 209, musket, and #11 caps. All I have ever used were the #11 caps as I never had an ignition problem using a good #11 cap and there is not so much blow back with it.

I know what you mean about the blowback Dave. It was just something I wanted to see if it would work. I will say the musket caps stay on the tubing better than on any musket cap nipples I have used.
I need to sand the nipple a little so the reg #11 caps go on better and then I will go back to using them.

I changed all my hunting sidelocks over to musket caps because they are easier to manipulate in the woods. #11 are hard to manage in the woods with cold fingers and gloves on.

I am sure you may get a little more flash with the musket caps then #11's, but I wouldn't think enough for me to switch over for an ignition problem. I shoot the real the deal in the woods.
