Does anyone use teflon tape on their breechplugs?
so the threads don't get dirty? I was just wondering. I never have, but am curious what the up/ downside might be. Thanks.
|
I do now with BH209, i love it. If i was shooting 777 or Pyrodex i would probably still use grease. Not positive on that one to tell you the truth.
|
Just got some...gonna try it, but I won't be able to shoot for quite awhile. I plan on using a bit of grease still.
|
Yes, Sabotloader put me onto Teflon about a year a go. I use it on Omega,Triumph and Encore Endeavor. It does keep the threads clean, one thing any body thats going to try it should be aware of is that there are about 6 grades [may be some I don't know about]. I use 2 of the grades myself they are graded by thickness and identified by color. One tip I will pass on is that with the XT plugs its good to spray them with synthetic oil after stretching the Teflon on it makes it possible to keep the tape completely intact and operate the breach plug by hand. Have an Accura! I use the Pink stuff; awesome. Look mom no greasy fingers!
|
I'm also a teflon tape user. Picked up on it from Sabotloader. Much better than grease/neverseize when it comes time to clean.

Teflon Tape
Hey, I use the Pink Teflon tape and Slick 5o one Grease on all my MZ's and it does help removing the breechplug. I must admit that some times it is a little more work getting the tape off the plug in cleaning.
|
I use the pink on the omega and the white on the XT plugs. That does not necessarily mean that is what will fit your gun best they do vary but the tape is not that expensive and it is a good starting point. Lee

I used Never-seize for a lot of years, then tried teflon tape. The tape works very well and is much easier to clean up.

I use the white tape on my Omegas (2). I tried the pink stuff on each one once, it was WAY too thick.
|
Sabotloader also turned me onto Teflon Tape, I use it all the time now. He said to get the (PINK) kind but I cant find it anywhere and I get some strange looks when I ask for it,LOL! It works great! Thank's Mike!

AH something new for me to try, I've always used white lithium grease.
|
I use the white teflon on my knights and my White 97. Been using it for 2 years, works great!! Thanks to sabotloader, Thanks Mike!!
|
Yes. One of the first things I picked up from the guys around here. Makes it much easier and cleaner, if your unloading at the end of a day of hunting.... no grease on the pellets or bullet!
I will say after my last range session, putting about 30 rounds through, I had to use the breech plug wrench on my Triumph. I realize now that I should have probably "cracked" the plug after every 5-6 shots! |
There are 3 grades of teflon tape commonly available:
white is 3 mils thick and .7 gm/cc density pink is 3 mils thick and 1.35 - 1.50 gm/cc density yellow is 4 mils thick and 1.35 - 1.50 gm/cc density In common language that means the white & pink are the same thickness, but the pink is a lot tougher (heavier construction). The yellow is a little thicker and the same toughness as the pink. I have a Traditions rifle that requires teflon tape on the threads if I want to get the breech plug back out with hand tools. With grease the dirt/crud blows back into the threads. The plug will break loose easily, but after a couple turns it locks up. I've tried several types of grease and powders and the result is always the same - impact wrench to remove the plug! With teflon tape it is hard to screw the plug in, but it comes out with the same pressure as it took to put it in. I use the yellow tape on that rifle on it most of the time. (I keep all 3 types in my truck, I'm a plumber). I would suggest using the tapes in the order of thickness/density from low to high and find out which works best for you. Start with white, then try pink, then yellow. If the white screws in easily and a lot of dirt blows by, then try pink. If that goes in easy you might want to try yellow. |
Pink Tape
Hey BreechPlug, Have you tried Home Depot or Lowe's. They both have it down this way in Orange Co. NY,

If you buy the TC brand thats what you get. |

It sounds like you have a gall in the threads. You might try running a hand threader over them if thats what it is it will usually take care of the problem. You have metric threads so be sure to use the right ones. |

I use the white stuff too. I also put just a dab of CVA anti sieze on the taped threads........just the way I do it.
|
just put some TC bore butter on the threads with no matter what powder u use. That stuff is just the best for that.

I have used teflon tape only - since Underclocked invented it. I really do not like oils and greases that might get shot into the bore. I use both the pink and the white tape depending on the gun and how tight the BP is in the threads. Just wrap it the correct direction over the nose first and down to the primer well... ![]() |

Most of us on here use the teflon tape. Cayugad put me onto this when I had my Genesis. Not only is is easy to clean up but it also does a good job at lessening blowback.

Well I am not quite sure just what all the question marks signify but Among the accessories TC sells is a small roll of Teflon tape of the pink thickness, Its what I use on one of my BP.

Thanks for the pvc tape info.
I work at Home Depot and we transfer merchantdise in for customers all the time. All you need is the sku number (store part number) and the plumbing associate can get on the computer and get it in the store within three to seven days. Or get the sku number and go to home depot.com and get it from the net. If anyone is interested I will go to my store and see if we carry the pink tape and will get the sku number for you. Just pm me. |
I had thought the whole idea behind the breechplug in my TC Pro Hunter was to prevent blowback. I have not used tape since i got it. It has a ruibber gasket on it to stop that up. I don't know if the residue om my threads is that bad, I can't recall. I am either getting senile or it ain't that bad for me. I shoot on average 30-50 shots per range round............
|
i have an ENCORE and the only blow back i get is through the 209 primer hole ..nothing leaks through my threads ..my hunting partner keeps reminding me by saying "you should have bought the TRIUMPH "

You do know that by shiming the firing pin block you can adjust the head space to a 209 or a cartridge? I use Bellm shims but could make some without any problem if I wern't so lazy. |
yes i was on mike bellms site ...something i have not tried yet ...thanks
