You might not have long to wait. They are apparently already moving north into southern Iowa from Missouri. The herd isn't that big yet, but if the hogs are as adaptable to the colder midwest winters as they are to just about everything else, it won't be long before they're all over the place. They seem to breed like rats, and survive better... not a good combination. The Iowa DNR issued a shoot on sight request a couple years ago, asking only that if you shoot one you call the DNR to report date/time/location so they can track the buggers. Apparently they are pretty elusive and the DNR can't get a good live count, so they have to estimate the infestation by the ones that are killed.

Did a little research and discovered that the Texas Wildlife Dep't stocked javelina into several counties along the Red River in the 1950s.

Years ago, the company i worked for, in Montana, sent me to Arizona. Whilst there i hunted and killed a javelina. The locals said they were like rats, and not worth eating. I read up some about them, and tried to shoot a young animal. I was very careful not to touch the big gland on the back, and i think other glands, when i butchered it. The meat was excellent. It tasted like venison intermixed with pork. Eating that javelina made me very home sick for Montana, and i really looked forward to being back home and hunting deer and elk.

the only javelina i ever ate was butchered very carefully as mentioned above ,and marinated in a marinade that was heavy on apple cider vinegar. the end result was some very good barbecue .that was in Mc Mullen County Texas. When we were cleaning the thing I thought I was going to Puke. The smell is unbelievable.
