Any NEF Guys Out There?
I ran across this ad a little while ago. Not my cup of tea, but the Huntsman has a good reputation and you sure can't beat the price.

NEF Huntsman
I own a SS Huntsman and it IS awesome! I replaced the breachplug with the Metrics Unlimited plug and ditched the factory ramrod for one made by Hubbard. I can shoot a group just a little larger than a dime at about 60 yards with BH 209 powder and a red dot sight. Now....if we had any deer left in Wisconsin this year I would have tried it out on one of those!

Semi: If you don't buy that you are NOT EVEN Semisane:s4:
I have a sidekick, same as the huntsman but strictly muzzleloader, (can't interchange barrels.) It gives my Encore a run for the money in the likeability department. BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT :poke: |
I had an Encore and it was a piece of ****. I have a Sidekick that was bought for only $159. on sale at Bass Pro Shop. It was meant to be a backup to the Encore.
Well to make a long story short the Encore went up onto the auction block and I kept the Sidekick. That Sidekick has been around for about seven years and It has taken at least one deer each year and as much as three last year. She has earned her keep. My only complaint is with the breech plug. I don't like it, too user unfriendly. But here she is: ![]() She has paid for herself many times over. I shoot a Hornaday saboted 300 gr. XTP over 85 grs of loose BP or Pyrodex RS. |
That is what I paid for a used one about five years ago without all of those accessories. It shoots really well and the Metrics Unlimited breech plug is a great upgrade to the gun, very user friendly. I also use the Hubbard's ram rod. I don't get to use it much because my son has claimed it.

Semisane... you need another rifle.

Not familiar with either of these. Where can I get more info on them? |
Metrics plug/Hubbard ram rod
Here's some info on the Metrics plug.......
To get you started..... First determine whether your gun has the 5/8" O.D. plug or the 7/8" O.D. plug. Huntsmans built from 2001 up to and including 2004 used the 7/8" plugs. Huntsmans and Sidekicks manufactured in 2005 and up until the time they discontinued used the 5/8" plug. You should also receive some "o" rings. These are to placed in the primer pocket of the new plug immediately under the primer to seal it, avoiding most if not all blow back. You will no longer need the red primer carriers with the new stainless steel model. Then call: 1-800-638-7986 Email: [email protected] Mail: Metrics Unlimited 6709 Chicago Road Warren, MI 40892 Attn: Nick They are a great bunch of people at this place. Nick and Busta worked collaboratively and were instrumental in the creation of these plugs. Last I knew the plugs were priced under $29.00 (when I purchased mine) and that included the shipping. Have fun! Here's some additional contacts for Hubbard's: 1-800-236-7486 or 1-205-665-0444 Email: [email protected] Doug B. |
I don't think anyone mentioned that the MU plug also has a hex head so that the goofy NEF tool is not required to remove it. I have a Huntsman that I just bought used as the price was too good to pass up. I also intended it for a backup rifle. With the exception of my Whites I consider the Huntsman a primary rifle now. It shoots conicals as well as the Whites and is close to as easy to deal with on reloading after the first shot. With BH209 and the new MU plug even that is now not a problem.

Thanks Doug!!!

Gave Nick a call and ordered the new plug. I am looking forward to some great shooting time with it.

I called up the company and they didn't seem to really care. I told them I hoped that it would work at the range and if it didn't, I would be sending it back for a refund. I don't know, but I seem to always have this happen to me. Why can't I get a poduct that is in good shape??? Hope it works. |
rafsob,
Don't kick yourself. You've done all one can expect of a customer. You paid good money for it. They are the ones who are lacking. Keep us posted. |

I ordered 2 MU plugs, both where in good shape.
I have only used 1 so far, it screwed in by hand, no problem. Slack |
Rafsob, sorry to hear that. Like Slack, I ordered two and they arrived in good shape. I did notice that they were not as polished as others I have bought, but they both screwed in by hand without modification.
The MU plug has been very useful in almost eliminating all blow back as well as making almost any 209 primer ignite BH209, even the vari-flame adapters with small rifle primers in them. I can remove all spent 209 primers with my fingers. I have not experienced any stuck primers. One o-ring has lasted over 50 shots for me. The o-rings are #60's (if I remember correctly) and can be bought from Lowe's in a 10 pack for a couple of dollars. |
this is an old thread but would like to know if these plugs are still made or available
|
Miss those little guns...

In 2006 I shot for NEF, this was before NEF and Marlin was taken over by Remington. They sent me the gun in Jan. and after some trigger and sight work , I took it to the NMLRA Western Nationals in AZ. in Feb. I don't think I shot more than 100 shots before the Nationals....maybe 1000 dry fire shots though...lol
They were great little guns.. I was able to bring a Nat. 100yrd. offhand(iron sights) record of 44/50 home and to win the Agg. using 90gr. of FF Goex - 45 grs. of cream of wheat and a 240 gr. Barnes. Great memories..... |
The plugs are still being made by metrics unlimitted.Same address and information on page one. I think Nick has moved on.

I would still recommend them only because they are the only ones available for our NEF guns. |
