CVA Accura

Been thinking about picking up another Muzzleloader to have in addition to my Savage. I have seen a lot of positive feedback on this forum in regards to the CVA Accura. Cabellas has the Stainless version with the Black stock(non-thumb hole) on sale for $289.00. Sounds like a good price, what do you folks think??

MountainDevil54 11-30-2009 08:44 AM

its an excellent deal, im loving mine day after day.

Underclocked 11-30-2009 09:36 AM

agreed. Good choice!

Roger46982 11-30-2009 09:54 AM

Very good choice, I have two and it is all I can do to not push the button on another at Cabelas.

Breechplug 11-30-2009 05:45 PM

I bought the SS/Black, loved it so much I bought the SS/Camo, then the Wife gave me some funny looks so I got her the SS/Camo. We both love em! Very ACCURATE and you get a-lot of good things in this ML that other's pay much more for with there brands. It shoulders well, it's not too light, it has a smooth clean trigger pull around 2-3 pounds. But what I like most is the SS Bergara Barrel, no need to break this barrel in, it shoots great right out of the box, with a decent scope 1" groups are the norm. In no time you'll be back on the phone to Cabela's gettin another, why, because when you find something you like as much as this ML you'll want 2!
Best of Luck to you and call now befor there gone!

Pulled the trigger and ordered it up last night. Had $120.00 in Cabellas gift certificates and they had free shipping on items $99.00 and over, which left a tab of $169.00 which my wife picked up for my birthday gift. :happy0157:

hows the kick on this gun?Worse than a 12 gauge kick?...Im just getting into muzzleloaders and this one interets me.This will be my first muzzleloader. What groups can I expect at 150-200 yards?Good enough to hit a deers vitals at those distances?
How about powder and bullet choice for this gun.I definatley want to use pellets but should I use 2 OR 3 pellets?I plan on getting a Nikon Omega BDC scope and see how well that works. It says its matched for 150 gr.powder and 250 grain sabots so what do you reccomend?Does this scooe perform as advertised?

Roger46982 12-01-2009 08:17 AM

They don't kick as much as a 12 ga. slug if that is what you were meaning, unless you go with a unneeded IMHO load of 150 grs. then the recoil is abusive. 150 to 200 yds. is a long way and would take a lot of load developement and practice. My longest shot to date was 160 with a solid rest and zero wind.

MountainDevil54 12-01-2009 08:38 AM

load up 100gr RS and a 444gr powerbelt, it will clear your sinuses.

But with the 245-295-348-338 + powerbelts with 100gr Pyrodex RS, the kick is maybe like a 30-30 to me. The recoil pad is super soft and the solid stock & especially the thumbhole stock like i have, really sucks up the felt recoil.

My best group with conicals at 100 yards was .853" outside to outside. Sabots shoot just as good, especially the 300gr xtp mag in a short black mmp24 sabot with 120gr pyrodex rs.

They are sweet shooting rifles.

IMO 3 pellet loads are a waste of time and money, get yourself a regular scope and screw that BDC stuff.

Underclocked 12-01-2009 09:49 AM

The Accura handles recoil very well. Most loads I've shot produce recoil more comparable to a 20 gauge shotgun. 200 grain XTPs even less. I don't believe you would be at all disappointed with the Accura - nicely done rifles.

The Nikon BDC is not a bad scope but it would not be my choice. The BDC-type of scopes can be useful if combined with a lot of range time at various ranges and a range-finder while hunting. You can use those extra marks in a number of ways with any number of loads. I would recommend keeping it simple though and just go with a quality 2x7 or 3x9 scope. Even then you can use the top of the lower thick section of the reticle in some situations (plex type reticle).

I think you could get up to speed fairly quickly for 150 yard shots but 200 would take a bit longer. The rifle is certainly capable once you find some good loads - but technique along with judgment of range and wind effects can be a little trickier. Mostly it would just take practice AT THOSE RANGES. And waiting for calm air. :)

This thread has been a great read, go my Accura (black/blue) in from Cabelas today and will be shopping for a scope tomorrow.

Big Z 12-01-2009 06:10 PM

The blued/black is only $240 at cabelas right now. Hard to pass up if you want a ML!

Hope you'll be as Pleased as I am with your new ACCURA. Does the Bk/BL come with a Bergara Barrel?

Breechplug

If it is an Accura - doesn't have to come with the Bergara?

ogg 12-03-2009 04:30 PM

two more questions for you accura owners....First,I know a little about muzzleloaders but not much and ive been reading where people use a drill bit or something to clean their breech.(something like that but im not sure)Whats the deal with that?
Also what grouping can I expect to get at 150 yards?Im torn between getting a savage 220 slug gun or a Accura for my main firearm season weapon.Shotgun positives are less matenience and from what ive been reading a 150 yard shot is very easily doable with this slug gun.So is there really any advandtage in accuracy a muzzleloader has over the savage?

Big Z 12-03-2009 06:05 PM

Ogg,
Many methods are out there for cleaning the flash hole of all the fouling. Toothpicks, welding picks (er whatever they're called), etc. I don't worry about it myself, never have any problems.

150yd grouping. Time will tell, the gun chooses the load. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to grab a 3" group if you have a scope. Tighter isn't out of the question. You might be able to get 20ga velocities accurately with your gun, not sure about it though. All else being equal, I'd guess a ML will be more fun for ya!

IndyBassin 12-03-2009 07:39 PM

CVA Accura - $240 from Cabela's .... and yes, that's a Bergara Barrel
Nikon ProStaff 3x9-40 - $127 using wife's discount at Dick's Sporting Goods
Durasight rings: $25 from Gander Mountain

Sub $400 muzzy :D

IndyBassin 12-03-2009 07:41 PM

Our muzzy opener in Indiana is Saturday. I'll be hitting the range to sight her in and then the woods for an evening hunt since my son has a b-ball game that morning.

I'll get some better pics and maybe some video to do a proper review of my budget set up.

Underclocked 12-03-2009 07:48 PM

The drill bit thing is primarily relevant to cleaning the flame channel beneath the primer cup of the breech plug. And that is only when using Blackhorn 209 powder which leaves a hard carbon buildup in that flame channel. For an Accura, a 1/8" bit is a little too big - a 3/32" will work fine though. Occasionally there might be need for such a cleaning with some other powder type, but the BH209 makes it mandatory.

As to your decision, it's yours to make. I don't own a shotgun of any sort and haven't for years. Quail were nearly destroyed in this area (just now starting to see a bit of a comeback), I got tired of wasting ammo shooting at doves, and you have to be just plain crazy to hunt ducks and geese. ;)

MountainDevil54 12-04-2009 06:52 AM

thats a sweet lookin set up you got there Indy! I really like those rings

Indy nice combo! How do you like them Durasight Z2 Alloy Scope Mounts and Rings??? I had purchased them for My ACCURA (the see thru's) only to find out that they were a bit too high, I had to raise My head up to look through them, it just was'nt a good fit for the ACCURA, so I had to send them back, and Im 6'6" tall.
The Durasights are nice other than that.

Been wanting to buy an Accura but when i read the reviews on Cabela's they either have some problems or someone there is purposely giving bad reviews. All of you here which i trust more seem to think it is a good rifle. Have a MK 85 Knight that i hunted with for years but is so hard to get the 209 primer in the conversion. Bought a wolf on sale and is ok. Bought a new knight rolling block that i wished i handn't right before i found out they were going out of business. Fifth shot and the hammer wouldn't stay ****ed so had to send it in for fix or replacement. Did shoot a doe with it after that. Still want the accura and so far all of you seem to like it. Trying to buy a long range hunter green mountain barrel for my T/C Hawken but they are all out of stock right now. I like the break open design of the wolf but think the accura might be a better gun. Anything i should know negative about them? Thought about the kodiac but like the break open for cleaning. thanks guys, i am new to this forum

Underclocked 12-05-2009 01:54 PM

The only "negative" I can think of, aside from the goofy looking buttstock, is the alloy receiver. One has to be very careful when reinstalling the barrel or you will deform the thin edge located at the front of receiver. They should have made that piece a bit thicker/stronger. The damage, should you suffer any, is cosmetic at worse and even then it gets hidden by the forearm. I've had three of them here, shot two of them and the third went to a friend. He REALLY likes the Accura and so do I. I would still have two except for selling one to help fund an Apex purchase.

I've had exactly zero problems with them (discounting the one thing pointed out above). Even that goofy looking buttstock becomes a lot less so when you shoulder the rifle - fits well and sucks up recoil nicely.

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...set=ISO-8859-1 is identical to the one still in my gun case. I wouldn't call 4.9 out of 5.0 a bad showing on the reviews.

I have 3 ACCURA's, 2 for me and one for My Wife. When it comes to picky, Im picky, nothing bad to say about the ACCURA, it's a sweet shooter and smooth trigger pull. No need for the Green Mountain Barrel, the Bergara Barrel it comes with is in my opinion long range enough, I get about 3"+- groups at 200yds, plenty good for long range shooting. I have a Kodiak Pro, Im not really impressed with the action as you (cant) remove it for cleaning, but it does shoot well. Cabelas now has the ACCURA ON SALE, SS/Camo for $349 and SS/Thumbhole for $319.

new accura for me

Thanks guys for all the input on the accura rifle. Seeing most of you likeing the gun i just ordered a new stainless/black stock from Cabela's tonight. With it on sale for $289 and promotion 20 off i couldn't pass that up. I have the wolf and like the break open action. Bought a knight rolling block earlier this year right before i found out they were going out of business. 5 shots later the hammer would not stay back ****ed so had to send the trigger mechanism in for repair or replace. Lucky i got that done i guess. Left a bad taste for me a i have a stainless MK 85 that has served me flawless for many years. Just too hard with the conversion kit to get the 209 primers in easy. Also have a T/C Hawken that i put together many years ago and am trying to get a long range hunter barrel for it. Green mountain is behind in production. Always shoot my deer here in Iowa with a muzzle loader and bow. Your input put me over the edge to buy this accura plus the sale. New to this site so hope to enjoy and will help if i can with all my years of shooting. Thanks, Dean

Honestly, the ONLY reason I love the Nikon Omega scope with BDC is because of it's incredible 5" of eye relief.... no scope cut for me or my kids that shoot 'em as well.... EVER! :s2:

ogg 12-06-2009 09:40 AM

I think the nikon omega scope comes in regular nikoplex reticle so maby ill just go with that...and have the added bonus of extra eye relief.

tjj 12-06-2009 09:52 AM

Natchez had the omegas with the nikoplex, 3-9x40 for around 140$ Good glass for the money.
