Opening Day of Primative Weapons Season

Saturday was opening day of primative weapons season here in Georgia. I was in my stand at daylight and sat untill noon. I decided I would sit untill 1:00 and decided to eat my sandwich and drink some coffee.
At 12:15 I cought some movement off to my left and saw two deer moving into a thicket. They were feeding on acorns. I continued to watch and could see parts of them every now and then. Finally, at 12:45 I could see one of them moving toward one of my shooting lanes. When it started to cross the lane I was ready and made my shot. She dropped in her tracks. She was a nice fat doe and field dressed 80lbs. The range was 55 yards.
I was shooting a little 50 caliber flintlock that I built earlier this year. The load was 70 gr of GOEX 3-f behind a pached round ball. The patch was lubed with bear grease.
What a nice way to staart the season.

Congratualtions on the doe. Its a great feeling to pull a shot off like that with a flintlock. Did you get complete pass through with that ball? Amazing how a roundball will plant these deer.

Congrats on the doe. That flint lock did a good job.

It is a good feeling to put meat in the freezer with such a simple but effective tool. The ball struck high and behind the right shoulder. Surprisingly , I did not get a complete passthrough. The ball stopped just under the skin on the opposite side of the chest.

Nice shooting. I got a .50 Hawkens I built early this yr also, cap and not flintlock though. Can't wait to get into the woods with it.
