.430/240 gr. XTP What do you think???
 

What do you guys think about this bullet? What loads and how much powder will it take and still stay together? Thinking about using it on whitetails and wild hogs.

For umteen years the .430/240 has been a favorite projectile of a lot of folks. Can not tell you about loads as it is not a bullet that I use. I know that XTP can come apart on occasions if it is shot to hard.... but other than that - shoot away...

Great bullet. All you will need for whitetails. I use this bullet with a green Crush Ribbed sabot in my Omega over 90 gr B209 and Win primers. Great combination. About 1800 fps. Devastating on deer. Never shot a hog though. Recoil is minimal. What more could you ask for.

Thats what I was thinking. I was going to try 100 - 110 gr of BH209 and a regular harvester green sabot. My endeavor seems to like the regular better than the crushed rib. Will the bullet hold up to 110gr of powder if the shot was under 50 yards.

This is one of the better XTP bullets I used it for about 5 years, its fine for deer even though there are a couple I like better. If you go higher than 110gr consider the 44cal 300gr XTP or the 250gr [bonded] Gold Dot. Lee

That's a great little bullet. We (my huntin' party) have been using them for years. They've killed a pile of deer. I only shoot them w/85g of 777 or BH and I've never had a problem with them.

i have used the 240 grain .430 XTP bullet since my return to muzzle loading 10 years ago. Have killed about 20 deer and dozens of wild hogs with that bullet. The vast majority of those kills were bang flops or near bang flops. Use the 240 grain .430 XTP bullet along with 100 grains of Pyrodex and you will have a fine deer load.

Same combo that I use in my Knight DISC, except I use 90 grains of Triple Seven. Has flattened every deer that I've hit with it. It's a great hunting bullet IMO.

IMO if you keep these bullets within the velocity parameters that they are designed for, you should be fine. Hornady list these bullets for expansion between 900-1800 fps. I don't think that a manufacturer would list a bullet at speeds that they would fall apart at. I have taken about 5-6 deer with the .430 240gr xtp between 1700-1800 fps and every shot was a complete pass through, with very short blood trails. And lots of blood.
I just ordered some sierra .429 240gr JHC and some Hornady .430 300gr xtps, just because. I have a feeling that I will always return to the .430 240 xtps. All the power you need for whitetails and recoil is very managable. JMHO

Been using the 240xtp with 90 grains pyrodex rs in a new frontier cascade magnum for 3yrs now and have killed 5 deer with it, farthest i had to track was about 60yds it was a big doe, heart shot and was a complete pass through, heart was jello like! Great bullet in my opinion. Shot 3 deer last year with it last year, all bang flop!
