Starter Muzzleloader?
 

Looking to invest in a muzzleloader sometime soon to get a couple extra weeks of hunting each year. Dont know too much about it but looking to research it all. What would be some good cheap muzzleloaders to look at? Thanks

CVA Wolf in 50 caliber for an inline. Also I know in PA the extended season is Flintlock only, so check your laws prior ot a buy.

You can usually find some good deals on CVA and Traditions guns from Cabelas and other on-line retailers. I got a Remington (Traditions) Genesis while Cabelas ran a sale, for about $100. It won't win a beauty pageant but it shoots just fine.

cva wolf, cva buckhorn would be 2 great picks. You can even find the Optimas for around $200. In fact there is one under the muzzleloading classifieds on www.go2gbo.com

You don't list your location, so be sure and check the local laws and what can and can not be used. If as mentioned your in PA and they need a flintlock, then I would go on the auction sites and get a good used flintlock and hunt my heart out.

Some cheap rifles (and I dislike that discription) are the Wolf, Buckhorn, and look for deals on rifles at some of the stores. Someone said they were selling an Optima at Cabela's reasonable.

I have a CVA Wolf, and for the money,it is a great little gun.

There is cheap (price) and cheap (quality). The two are not always the same though somewhat related.

If you are really concerned with price, get a CVA that fits what you need. Personally I have always liked T/C better but CVA has moved up the ranks over the past few years and I consider them a decent value.

I wouldn't waste your time on Traditions. A few people on here have the Genesis and like it but of all companies I think you'll find the most complainers about Traditions than any other brand.

I have 2 traditions and have mixed feelings on them.

One is a lightning bolt action . It actually is not a bad gun but I have had problems with th ebolt in th epast.
The other is a Pursuit . I would not buy it again if I had it to do over.


My biggest problem with Traditions has been with customer service and "technical support" . This alone has led me to the point I will not buy another traditions

If T/C is one of your choices, Cabela's has a good sale on Omega's, the no frills model is 299, great shooters. The Triumph in the no frills model comes with a 2.5-7X32 scope for 399. I have an omega, and they are great guns. The Triumph is highly spoken of by those shooting one.

Traditions Pursuit XLT on sale for only $150 at cabela's. Break action, 50 cal. It'll do the trick.

If you live where a Flint lock is required get the best you can and have an experenced person help you untill you understand it well. They are a much bigger problem to get and keep working right than a cap lock or and inline.
If you can go with an inline check out the Triumph that is simple and easy to load and clean and comes out of the box with good hunting accuracy with a number of loadswill shoot in it. The Triumph is designed for a scope.
If you must use iron sights the check out the Omega that will be coming on the market this year.
Some people have trouble understanding that in most circumstances you get what you pay for and what is made cheaper will show it at some point. Lee

I've got a CVA wolf and a traditions buck stalker.. Just bought the traditions so I haven't hunted it yet. but it seems like a really good little rifle. Definately check to though to see what your state's regulations are. Remember that with the right load any of these "cheap" rifles will make a deer just as dead as any other rifle will.

Cabelas has a cva kodiak pro with a scope sling and gun case for 239.00. I have not used the kodiak, but have used many other cva and had no problems.

Same with me. The wolf is a great little gun, the buck stalker seems to be almost made identical. I too have yet to shoot the traditions though... I will know before week is up though.

IMO, save your money and buy a TC. I went the "cheap" route with the Traditions Pursuit XLT and regret it. My father has an Encore, and we both agree that it could be the best shooting gun we've ever shot. It's every bit as accurate as the 30.06 at 100 yds, making some nice clover leaves. I realize the Encore is in a completely different price bracket, but any TC will out shoot the "cheaper" guns, again just my opinion. Good luck!

I like my CVA Wold for accuracy and size, but hate the crud ring I get no matter what combo I try with T7. The one thing that doesn't make sense to me though is why they make the ramrod too short. I use the three inch swiveled extender which is a pain to have to screw on for a follow up shot. Thankfully, I haven't needed a quick follow up. Great brush gun!
