385 grain Hornady vs. ELK!

Sorry guys, I have not been on here for quite a while, but I figured I would post on here with my recent success on my elk hunt here in NV. I had a unit 061/071 cow muzzle loader tag. I ended up seeing about 75 elk, and had several others within close range that I never saw because of the timber. On the 5th day, I was able to make a 1 mile long stalk on a group of elk sunning themselves and take a 600 lb cow at 95 yards. The bullet went through both shoulder blades, and I was able to recover the bullet just under the hide on the other side. Needless to say, I was very impressed with the bullet performance! Here are some pictures.

The load was a 385 Hornady Great Plains on top of 90 grains of GOEX 2f, CCI 209 shotshell primer, and a Traditions Pursuit LT.

First picture is Telephone Creek (I got the cow in Cat Creek)
Second is me and dad
Third is me and elk
Fourth is the "exit" wound right at the point of the shoulder
Fifth is the bullet as recovered next to an original

Later,

Marcial

Aw Charlie, you really screwed up. Don't you know you can't take Elk with stuff like real black powder and pure lead - not to mention a measly 90 grains of powder. :happy0157:

Congratulations on a great animal! Good report and pictures.

Well, I did cheat a little bit, with the inline and 209's, lol

You just had to go and shoot an elk with a simple conical and Goex??? Now where was your three pellets and your ballistics superior sabot? Just kidding.. congratulations on an nice looking elk. That conical really did a number on that thing.

Exactly my point Cayugad. Not to mention using a lowly Traditions Pursuit LT. Oh, the shame! Such nerve, shooting that gun at an animal at 95 yards. I fear good old Charlie Brown may be banned from the forum. :s7: :s2: :s2: :s2:

That is some nice looking country there. It would be fun to be into that many elk. Looks to be quite a large cow. Hope you didn't have to work too hard getting it home. Nice that you and your got to spend that time together hunting.

I've shot quite a few deer with 435 gr maxiballs and 100 gr loose Pyrodex. I've always said that soft lead conicals are murder on game. You proved it yet again. Nice job, and some great meat for the freezer.
