Gun Cases?

Just out of curiosity, if you use a case to either store or transport your muzzleloader, what case do you prefer?

Grouse45 09-09-2009 03:44 AM

I prefer to use a hard case when going hunting and to the range.

rafsob 09-09-2009 04:15 AM

I always case my guns with or without scopes. I don't have money to through away on new guns like some guys. The way some people care for or handle their guns is criminal.

I use a hard plastic case for transporting back and forth to the range and on trips. But once I get to camp or if I'm leaving to go hunting from my house, I don't use one.

Any of you fellas use Pelican Cases? I have one for the Endeavor and I love it.

Use metal cases fdor all transport. I travel alot w/ my guns and this was the best way to keep em' safe.

Do you guys find that transporting them in the plastic cases with foam inside keeps the scope from getting knocked off zero? I bought a case at Wal-Mart for $20 that's one of the double gun ones not long ago but I haven't had a chance to try my muzzle loader out in it. I previously used a gun sock but was very careful that the scope didn't bounce around and hit anything. With these hard cases can I just put it in there and put it in the truck or back seat and not worry about the scope?

I've never had one lose zero... been usin' them about 10 years now. That being said, I don't throw my guns around either. When I put them in the car/truck I make sure they aren't going to slide off the seat or something is going to fall on them.

I haven't had a gun knock off zero while inside a case. But I was using a RedHead hard case for a while. I just noticed that it was allowing a little dust to enter the case and would also allow a little condensation. I have experience with Pelican Cases being that the military primarily uses them for their sniper rifles. IMO, they're as good as it gets. I recently bought one and I couldn't be happier. You lay the gun on the center section of foam, trace it with chalk, and then cut out the shape with an electric carving knife. Kind of a PITA but you can't get a tighter fit anywhere else. And Pelican Cases are also air tight and water proof. I have seen some people have issues with condensation being trapped inside due to the tight seal when closed, but Pelican also sells Desiccant cartridges that eliminate that issue. Plus, they're pretty much indestructable. I wouldn't have a second thought if I needed to fly and checked my rifle. The loading crew can beat the crap out of this case and it wouldn't be phased.

had an issue once where the foam got wet somehow and put the gun in the case and forgot about it for a couple weeks when my parents got real sick, bad rust problem. Make sure you get em' out when not in use. Used to spray the foam inside w/ wd40.

i have a fiberglass gun case[ very ridged] and when i leave tomorrow morning at 5 am. for the caribou hunt ,i will not worry that some moron throws it into the planes baggage suit .my fishing rod is also included in my gun case .

Are you talking about Pelican Cases or hard cases in general?

MountainDevil54 09-09-2009 05:29 PM

We just use soft padded rifle cases for the muzzleloaders.

Yes definately! I once had a Leupold lose zero on me that was in a padded bag riding in the back of the truck just coming home from the range. But I guess that was enough to throw it off.

So now once I have a gun sighted in for hunting season, no matter where it goes, it goes in a hard plastic case. My MLs are all sidelocks and do not use scopes. For those I will use either the padded bag or hard case with the lock facing up.

I use this style of gun case:

It is made by Plano and is very good for the money. It is called the 1301 AIRGLIDE GUN CASE. It is listed here at the Plano website:

http://www.planomolding.com/fall/products.asp

I paid about $30. for mine at Cabalas. Don't know if they still sell them though. What I like about this case is that it lets the gun float in its support form. It will handle guns up to 50' long.

As to storing a gun in a foam case, I don't recommend that. I only use my cases to transport my guns. Any foam or cloth case will soak up and hold moisture and that will rust guns as someone has already stated.

Johnmorris 09-10-2009 05:06 AM

I use both soft and hard cases in WIs we have to have our rifles cased when in a vehicle or we get a 210.00 fine. Do not even lean a gun against a vehicle.

Buck Hunter 1 09-10-2009 05:12 AM

SW Thomas, If you have foam and it get's wet it will rust the gun. Yes we used wd40 and sprayed on the foam. Stunk like h--- but never a rust problem. When I get home from a travel out of that case it comes and I leave the case open and if possible pull the foam out to dry as well.

ronlaughlin 09-10-2009 05:53 AM

No case here. Whilst traveling in the truck, the rifles are jammed in between the seats, or in the gun rack.

I may see the casing of guns in vehicles, but what the hell is the idea of not being able to leaning a gun against a vehicle? What do you do when you get out of the vehicle and get ready to go into the woods?

Sometimes these idiot politicians can put really stupid stuff into law.
