There are several different schools of thought on this subject, what works can depend somewhat on how well the gun is fitted to the body structure of the person; I always have to lengthen a factory stock. What works for me is to put the middle of the first pad square on the trigger [ I have seen a lot of people put there finger across the trigger on an angle it seems to go along with jerking the trigger] I also position my thumb carefully as I use the squeeze between the thumb and forefinger to set off the gun. MLKeith, I don't think you gain much by going with the 91. It would just shift the problem to bolt reassembly instead of cap assembly.

Now Cayugad, don't you go calling my favorite inexpensive scope "cheap".
Isn't that the truth about these scopes. I bought them just for something to be on the rifle while I decided what fancy scope I wanted to buy. Well I ended up liking the scope so much I bought a couple more of them when they were on sale. A straight 4X is plenty of scope for where I hunt around here.
ML Keith, I shoot the model 97 and of course the Bison is the same why with that locking cap and spring. I sometimes have the devil to pay to get that cap finally in, and get it started. I found that by putting the barrel muzzle on the floor (or ground on a towel) and pushing down, I get much better results. That's one reason I went to quick release rings. More room for my fat hands if I need it. I think Underclock suggested that a long time ago for me as well (about the QR rings that is).
