URGENT URGENT-----Range help-----*****
I'm at the range NOW guys. Should I start at 100 yards and get it dead center but just 2-3 inches HIGH...or go ahead and go for the 150 yard sight in I want. Please respond ASAP---DrASUS
|
DrAsus
personally if this is the first trip I start @ 25 yards and get the scope lined up so that you a dead on left and right and maybe a 1" or less high @100 Then normally I go to 50 and repeat the process then a 100 I can not remember what projectile you are shooting but if you sight in @ 100 yds 2/3 inches high and dead on left and right chances are really very good that you will be very darn close at 150 - but only shooting that range will tell you for sure |
1st Shot at 150 yards: 130gr 777, 250gr TC SW, Harvester SB sabot, CCI primer
7 1/2 inches left.......9 1/2 inches high Should I reshoot with NO adjustments and see what 100gr 777 will do or go ahead and adjust for the 130gr 777 and reshoot |
|
|
yes..777 pellets....everything will stay the SAME except pellet loads----DrAsus
|
ok...i'm not that good with ballistic charts......help
|
1st Shot at 150 yards: 130gr 777, 250gr TC SW, Harvester SB sabot, CCI primer 7 1/2 inches left.......9 1/2 inches high 7X9 At 150 will be a very large scope adjustment... something like 17 clicks right and 21 clicks down... But I still think you need to find the location of the group... |
ok...I'll reshoot with NO adjustments and no changes--Drasus
|
2nd shot: 130 gr....... 3/4 inch RIGHT...........9 1/2 inches HIGH....
I must have pulled the 1st shot!!!--Dr |
Like - i have never done that before....
|
we're on rain delay......
I'll shoot a third shot NO adjustments or changes....and if it is pretty close to my 2nd...I start adjusting the scope DOWN--DR |
and Sabotloader...you haven't done that before...hehe
|
DrAsus
Gosh! i wish it would rain here... the farmers don't but I do... suppose to be near 100 this afternoon but cool off this weekend and maybe rain this weekend.... |
right NOW i'm not liking it....I'm trying to get my gun ready for ML season. It's only about 1 1/2 months away. And with work and all..its hard to get to the range...if it would only stop for about 2 hours I'd be good.
I AM swabbing in between EVERY shot..1 wet....1 dry---DrAsus |
WA HOOOOOOOOOOO
100 posts......sorry had to do it!!---DrASUS |
if I remember correctly last time I was at the range (granted I was playing around with different pellet loads and different bullet brands) I had it dead center but about 2 inches HIGH...which is what I wanted given I wanted to shoot longer distances. I got to thinking that 150yard sight in would be the perfect sight in for me as that will be my most common shot. I'm still gonna see how she is at 100 yrds after I get her sighted in a 150yrds...just so I know what my gun does. Same for 200 yards. 200 yrds will probably be my max shot distance where I hunt. Sabotloader...do the ANTI-rain dance for me so I can get this thing done with---DrAsus
|
Sabot----do u think my gun likes only 100gr pellets?? That would definitely bring it down without ANY scope adjusments--correct???
|
DrAsus
That would definitely bring the POI down but for that bullet to work correctly especially at the ranges you are talking - you are going to need the velocity to get the energy... Going down to 100 grains of pellets would be like shooting 85 grains of BP - good for a 100 yards in a sidelock but I am not thinking I would shoot much over a 100 with that load... |
ok...i'll stick with the 130gr.......still waiting for the rain to stop---drasus
|
3rd shot--130gr........2 1/2 LEFT.......8 1/2 HIGH
going to bring it down 9 inches....and go from there---Dr |
DrAsus
Yep! bring it down bring it right a bit also... gotta go to football practice - check how you did this evening - pretty tough if the coach is late..... |
5th shot-----NOT ON TARGET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no clean---6th shot---130gr 3/4" Left......11 1/2" LOW!!!!!!! What gives? I adjusted for 9 inches high awhile ago and now its shooting 11 1/2 inches low.....for a total of 20 1/2 inches of difference for a 9 " adjustment??????--Dr |

The 777 pellets are calibrated to pyrodex/BP, not 777 powder. Therefore 100gr 777 pellets is equivalent to 100gr pyrodex -- not 85gr. However 100gr 777 pellets is only equivalent to 85gr 777 loose. I think you math was reversed?? |
woul not cleaning after the 5th shot cause the 6th to be so Low????? First time i haven't cleaned in between shots...and the last!! There was so much crud!!!!--Dr
|
7th shot----CHANGED TO 150gr!!!!
1 1/2 " Right.................6" Low!!!!!! what to do what to do??--Dr |
It seems even though I have 1/4 " clicks that my adjustments are doubling.....
so I adjusted 3" down (since it was 6 1/4" HIGH) to get Shot 9 150gr........6" Left.......1/2" high (if that) Going home...bugs are eating me alive and I'm tired....possibly affecting the shots. Until next time----DrAsus |
|
Dr Asus you are not shooting 100yd which is what the clicks are supposed to be calibrated for; at 150 yd figure approx 1/2 inch I know that sounds to strong but my experience with that scope says its close, they are a bit on the strong side any way. I also believe in checking for group after I move the sight setting some times it takes a few shots before it settles down. Lee

Here's the SUMMARY for todays range results...drumroll please...:
Again all loads are the SAME except for pellet load changes using TC SW 250gr/777 pellets/CCI primers/Harvester Short Blk Sabots 1) 130gr 777 7 1/2" LEFT / 9 1/2" HIGH 2) 130gr 777 3/4" RIGHT / 9 1/2" HIGH 3) 130gr 777 2 1/2" LEFT / 8 1/2" HIGH Adjusted 9" DOWN to get 4) 130gr 777 2 1/2" RIGHT / 5" LOW 5) 130gr 777 NOT ON TARGET Did not clean in between shot 5 and 6 6) 130gr 777 3/4" LEFT / 11 1/2" LOW 7) 150gr 777 1 1/2" RIGHT / 6" LOW Adjusted 6" UP to get 8) 150gr 777 2" LEFT / 6 1/4" HIGH Adjusted 3" DOWN to get 9) 150gr 777 6" LEFT / 1/2" HIGH (if that) Yes, I found that even though my Nikon has 1/4" clicks it was printing like 1/2" clicks...so I cut the adjustment needed in half. Bugs, weather, and my fatigue caused me to call in a day. I'm sure I flinched or pulled some shots. I don't have an idea shooting rest. The range I went to has 100-500yards in 100 yard increments. I had to go to the 200 yard range and back off 50 yards and confirmed it with a range finder. I then parked the car horizontal at that spot and reconfirmed with rangefinder. I had a blanket and towel on top of the car with a couple of shooting bags. I found the rear bag to be a pain with my right hand pulling the trigger sometime; thus resulting in some flinches. I don't think I like the trigger on the Triumph but oh well. My scope is definitely responding to my imputs and optics are very clear. Its actually the best scope I have right now. With the last shot (shot 9) it was almost horizontally center..maybe 1/2" high but was 6" left. I don't know if I flinched or what...my right hand and forearm are strained from all the cleaning and freakin breach plug being a pain in the A$$ today. Hopefully I'll get it sighted in before Hunting season. I'd like to take it a few times during regular gun season too! I just have to play around with the 130gr and 150 gr loads. I COULD even do 30x3+50 for a 140gr 777 load and see how she likes that. Ok guys time for the advice. What load should i stay with, 130 or 150? Or try the 140gr? Thanks for all the help and I hope this helps someone else as well--DrAsus |

It would still be my suggestion... sight in @ 25 and when i say sight it in... shoot a minumum of a three shot group at each range. And i still suggest your next move should be to 50 yards, especially with a new gun and a new ML shooter. After reading your description of you shooting bench and bags - I would really suggest shoot @ 100 yards get great groups there and a POI about 3" inches high. Get good at shooting a 100 then venture out to the 150 yard mark... but even then shooting with the setup you are using will be iffy at best to shoot great groups.... as you move out in range the the small mistakes get big very quickly. Good luck hope you find your answers.... |

I would also suggest that you make only one adjustment at a time, or you'll wind up "chasing the needles" all over the place. Pick a load and stick with it until you get your initial sight-in done. You can always adjust the load later, but one thing at a time. I'm also going to repeat the recommendation that you bring the target in closer to do your initial sighting in. Trying to do sight-in at 150 yards with a load that's not known to be accurate is really an exercise in frustration and will burn a lot more time and ammo than starting close and working out from there.
