Blackhorn 209 question
 

Hello all, been a while since I was able to get on the site. My question to you all is, what are the maximum loads for BH209? I shoot it in a CVA Kodiak Pro 45, and a TC Omega 50. They are both rated for magnum, 150gr charges. I've not been real successful in getting definite numbers for this. I'm guessing that a max of about 120gr would be close. Thanks

I use no more than 120 gr. of BH 209 in my Endeavor and Omega. I have heard of people using more in the 45 caliber rifles because they were using lighter bullets and there for there wasn't as much gas pressure in the barrel. Hope this helps.

The actual answer: No one really knows.

I too would consider 120 to be a max. That said, I am going to be hunting elk with 90 gr this fall. Plenty of power, doesn't kick as bad and is CHEAPER

Thanks for the replies. I've only used up to 110 grains so far, with great results. Just like to know my limitations! Have had great luck with the Shockwave 250gr, yellow sabots. Two rounds in nearly the same hole at 50yds, open sights from my omega. This powder takes a lot of the work out of shooting these guns.

I use it in my T/C Omega. I have tried the max load of 120gr. but I dont need that much. I use 110gr. BH209 and a Barnes 290gr. TMZ. My Omega loves that combo.

Guessing can get you killed or harmed in ways that will hurt a lot.

Just read the bottle and follow the instructions as listed. They are clearly printed on it. :bash:

Dude, why? there are limtations and then there is reasonoing. evry forum I have seen BH209 the sweet spot is 110 grains, again this is not CF gun.

I very much understand that this is not a CF gun, and I have no intention of pushing my guns at or beyond the sensible limit. Knowing the limit does not mean going beyond it, just more knowledge. As for the guessing, just a figure of speech. Relatively new to muzzleloading, so it never hurts to know the parameters. Definitely not my first rodeo with shooting in general, but still come up with lots of questions in regards to muzzleloading. So, far it has been a blast!

Granted I'm not shooting a magnum. I have an NEF Huntsman, and shooting at about 60 yards I'll lay Hornady 240gr. XTP's in a dime with only 85-90 gr. of BH 209 using a red dot. I would feel comfortable knocking down anything in the lower 48 with this combo and I can make a expensive $34.00, 10oz bottle last me a lot longer. I have a fairly small frame and it doesn't knock me clear to Mississippi every time I squeeze the trigger.
