S. Africa Hunt

I met a hunter the other day and he just got back from a S. African Hunt. His story was pretty interesting. I never did ask him what kind of rifle he was using. He hunted different types of Antalope because thats what he was most interestd in. He told me that the meat can not be sent back to the states. Only the pelts and heads. The meat goes to the tribe that is guiding the hunt. I wonder how a ML would fair in hunt like that. How big of an animal can you bring down with a ML?

Doc White and others hunted a lot of big African game with muzzleloaders. Doc had some very interesting accounts of his exploits on his web site. Whether they are still there I could not say.

Jim Shockey has been over there numerous times hunting dangerous game with a muzzleloader.

I wouldn't hesitate at all. I would use my favorite 300grn bullet and go. I would think powder would be an issue in Africa. Not sure though.

If i was going this year...

1st choice- 300grn Lehigh
2nd choice- 277grn Lehigh
3rd choice- 275grn Parker BE

If i had to use a Barnes bullet it would probably be the 275grn XPB, or the 300grn Barnes Original.

I'd be careful about focusing only on bullet weight in Africa for dangerous game. There is a reason they shoot a lot of solids over there. I would not use a Barnes or any bullet designed for big expansion, you MUST get adequate penetration. I've heard that people sometimes use hard-cast lead alloy bullets for that.

Barnes does make a banded solid in a .458. They're rifle bullets and come in 330, 450, and 500 grains. I'm not sure if they would fit properly in a sabot but it's an idea. It really depends on the game. If you're going after medium-small African game, an expanding bullet would work fine. But I don't think I would use an expanding or fragmenting bullet for large African game.
