The trouble with a White Rifle..
 

Today I had an urge to shoot. So I was looking at my wall of bullets, sabots, etc and could not decided what I really wanted to test. Then I saw a little white box I had marked as BISON .503 . These were some bull shop .5045 conicals I ran through my sizer for my White Bison to shoot. These were 500 grain conicals. So my decision on plastic and lead VS copper or brass was made. Lets shoot a White.

Last time I shot the Bison I had some ignition problems as the RWS caps are smaller then most and I was getting a "set the cap" strike then a fire. I had purchased 1000 CCI Magnum caps and decided.. try the Bison in hot weather and the new caps.

I then checked my notes and saw that I was pushing the Bison at 80 grains of Triple Seven 2f last time. So I decided to push that up 10 more grains to 90 grains.

Out to my range on crutches was not fun, but I promised the doctor I would behave.. So the stand was at 30 yards on the edge of the lawn and I figured that was good enough. I should point out, the Bison has a expensive $29.00 Simmons 4X Pro Diamond scope on it with some Traditions rings.



On a clean barrel the first shot was low. I then fired five more and swabbed. After that I fired five more and swabbed really good. That large hole is a ten shot group. Not too bad for a White that cost me $100.00 and a $30.00 scope. With that load I think a deer would be in trouble around my house.

After I swabbed I down charged the rifle to 60 grains. (believe it or not 90 grains of powder and that conical does have a little recoil to it. 60 is much more shooter friendly) I swabbed really good, wanting the White to have a fair chance. I picked out a new point of aim at a green square. The first shot again just a little low. The rest were doing real well I thought.



Using the CCI Mag caps, the gun never misfired, and ignition was very fast. It was 82 degree out there although in the sun it felt a lot hotter. But overall shooting the White is a nice way to relax. The trouble with a White rifle is.. they are just too easy to shoot. Load lead, fire, load lead fire.. nice!

What brand sizing die?? And what size sizing diie did you use?? I am having a hard time finding sizing dies for the 50 caliber. All I can find is a .501.

Did the bullet "slip fit"?? Tell us a little about the loading and sizing comparison between the barrel and the bullet. This is important stuff. I have been experimenting latley, and it is getting expensive, however I am trying to find the "magic" bore diameter to sizing die ratio.

What alloy?? Tom.

You'll have to ream out one of the .501 sizers to get what you want (if you want something a little bigger). Either that or order it custom from Lee or Stillwell Tool and Die. Buckshot might also fix you up.

Boy Dave I wish I had that trouble with all my Muzzy's
Keep favoring that leg maybe by fall you will be in good enough shape to walk in the woods. I would hate to see you with a shoot from the car permit.

500 grain conical & 90 grains T7 - WHOOPEE! Good shooting there Cayugad. I suspect that 60 grain load is all you're going to need in your short range hunting situation.

Love those 4X ProDiamonds. I haven't been able todestroyany of the three I have yet. Can't get them for $30 any more though. They're now #39.95 at Natchez. They'vebecome expensive scopes.:D

I ordered my sizing dies from LEE Reloading Company. I got a .504, .503 and a .501 along with a .452 as they will not do such sizes as .5045 I was told. So I can make bullets with the molds I have, like the UC short mags or REAL bullets,and size them to what I need, or I can size down Bull Shop Conicals. I also cast a .457 405 (actually a 423 grain) flat point that I size down for my .451 WhiteModel 97.

All my bullets are pure lead. The sizer and press was cheap IMO and it works really good. It also lubes my bullets at the same time. I apply the lube, run then through the sizer and they come out to size and all the grooves are filled real nice. Then I just have to clean the mess up.

UC told me about opening up the standard mold, but I never seemed to have that kind of skill, so instead I just pay to have it done for me.

Semisane.. I see that they are on sale again. I am tempted to buy a couple and just have around the house for rifles that I decided to scope. That Pro Diamond seems tuff as nails and it has good glass too. For my kind of shooting it works great.

I think they were $32.00 but don't quote me on that. Call Lee and they will set you up.
