Though I've used all 3 that you mention, I only have 3-9s now. Some 40mm some 50mm. 90% of my shots are about 30-40 yards as well. I leave it on about 4.5 and crank it up if I need to. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them, it's just a matter of personal prefence.

3x9x40 is a good all around scope. Close range put it on 3 power. Long range crank the power up. You just never know when you might need the extra power. It's also a better way to develope loads for your ML.

I like the NIkon Prostaff 2-7. It give me the nice wide field of view for close shots and enough mag for the longer shots (long for a ML). And IMO it looks sleeker on a ML than a bigger 40mm objective.
And its clear. Now if you want the best of both worlds, you can go with the Burris Short Mag scope in 3-9x32. It will cost you more. But they are good scopes.

I was wavering between the 2-7 or 3-9 for my triumph. I have come to the conclusion that I will choose the 2-7 because it's a good compromise, it's a little less expensive and I'm not going to be shooting magnum loads of 150 grains. I already have the Nikon prostaff 2-7 on my H&R ultra slug and it has been decent. So, I thought why not get another one. I have a few expensive things going on this summer, so I'll probably buy the 2-7 sometime in July. My triumph is the synthetic w/ weathershield. I'mputting Leupoldsilver bases and rings on and topping it w/ the 2-7 Black Nikon. Gonna look sick!!!

I guess it depends on your eyes. The older I got the more I needed.

I grew up with the fixed power scopes (4x) because the variables were expensive and suspect. I knew people who would leave them on the highest power and not be able to see the deer when it was running by them at 20 yards. One season I used a 2.5x20mm Leupold. I did shoot a deer out at 80 yards without a problem, but I was not confident with longer shots. I hunt in a much more open area now with almost no woods and have come to appreciate variable scopes. For the past several years I have been using Nikon Pro Staff 2-7x32mm and 3-9x40mm scopes. I usually leave the scope on 4x while hunting. However, when there is a greater than 100 yard shot and there is time to up the magnification, it gives me more confidence in the shot. If I have to pick one over the other, I would go with the lighter and more compact 2-7x32mm.

Your are correct Frank. The Leupold Grand Slam is a great scope and perfect for a ML thatcanhelp put out a goodbullet tolong distances with great accuracy. I put one on my Knight Vision and love the combination.

I have a 2-7x32 scope on my ML. It balances perfect on my DISC, and is more than enough scope for any shot that I'd take. I usually keep it around 4x and call it good.

i am a long time proponent of fixed power scopes and have made some long shots with them.In late May, i
made my longest muzzleloadershot everwhen i killed a sow at a laser transit measured 227 yards. BTW: She was running. The scope on that gun is a4X Redfield Widefield.

With the exception of some Unertl scopes on USMC guns, all of the snipers of WWII used scopes of 4X or less.
