What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I have been using t-7 in my cva optima. And to clean the barrel i have been using a solvent. Just wondering what other guys have been using. I have heard of guys using windex but not sure about that.

RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I use soap and water. Windex works because it is mostly water. Most formulae that people put together work for the same reason -they are mostly water. Soap or some kind of detergent is helpful because it puts dirt into suspension in the fluid but for our purposes that is gravy. Water is the basic.

RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I use a 50/50 mix of alcohol and Hoppes #9. But I use BH209.

RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I use hot, soapy water at the end of the day.
For range-swabs, I mix windshield-wiper fluid and rubbing alcohol 50/50 and keep it in a jar. (Ishoot T-7 too) I got that last from someone on the forums and it works great for cleaning in between strings... BP |

Triple Seven is one of them powders that the fouling can be removed with simple water. Now I use soap and water. BUT if you suspect any plastic or lead fouling, then you need to use a solvent.

Wouldn't the soap leave residue (soap scum) in the barrel? Just wondering because I don't know.

ORIGINAL: SWThomas Wouldn't the soap leave residue (soap scum) in the barrel? Just wondering because I don't know. I used to finish-out cleaning with a bucket ofhot, clean tapwater, after the soap-scrub step, but not any more. Now, I just dry the barrel out thoroughly in a warm oven and run a lightly oiled patch through the bore before reassembly. Can't see that it causes any problems, but too, I don't use alot of soap in the bucket, just a squirt or two of dish soap. That T-7 cleans up extremely easy compared to the Pyro that I used to shoot... BP |
RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
Every one of my MLs get the same treatment. Hot soap & water scrubbing, followed by a hot clear water rinse.
Dried, swabbed with alcohol patch and dried again. A patch or two of T-17, dried. Then treated with bore butter. The only difference is my Genesis gets treated with a quality gun oil instead of BB. Some of the guys don't like BB - but I've never had any issues with rusting using it. The trick is to be sure you get the barrel good and hot and dry before applying it. |
RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
Windex soaked patches at the range, hot soap and water at home, lightly lube a patch and run it through the bore and oil as usual.

RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I use Simple Green in hot water first. Stick the muzzle in the bucket and run a cleaning brush/swab up and down. Pulls the water up then pumps it out. I follow that with Clean HOT water, then dry and oil. Of course it helps if it is an in-line with the breach plug removed.

RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I use hot soapy H2O and rinse with hot water after shooting. After that I run some hoppes down the barrel. For cleaning between shots out on the range I use a alcohol pads, since I work in the ER I have an endless supply of those.

RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I use MAP- 2 parts alchohol, 2 parts peroxide and one part Murphy's oil soap. Works great on T7 fouling.

Wouldn't the soap leave residue (soap scum) in the barrel? Just wondering because I don't know. I use Zep Citrus Cleaner/Degreaser as the soap and then follower pretty much Powerfisher's directions. Windex, regular windex melts T7 and the ammonia in it is a metal stripper, even though it is very weak + the ammonia evaps very fast and carries h2o with it when it evaps. |
RE: What does everyone use to clean there barrels?
I believe that different things work best with different powders.
Pyrodex = citrus soap and very hot water. APP = same as above 777=Boiling water and Simple Green Blackhorn 209 =50% #9 and 50% alcohol |
