Shooting the Renegade for fun today

[hr]

Since Sabotloader has been pounding his Renegade out at 50 yards, I decided to take my .50 caliber Renegade out. Its only the second time I have had a chance to shoot it. I figured it was like my other Renegades, they liked a strong powder charge. So I loaded 90 grains of Pyrodex RS a cast .490 ball, pillow tick patch, moosemilk lube and RWS caps.

I held a six o'clock hold on the red bull. The first shot on a clean barrel was the lowest. The next two hits were right in there too. I then realized that this rifle shot dead on. So instead of adjusting the sights, I adjusted the sight picture and took a dead hold on the bulls eye.

The next five was using a full cover hold, splitting the red bull almost in two. The gun shoots just a little to the left, but I am not ready to adjust the sights yet. I was swabbing with alcohol between shots. I was more then pleased with that group. I also shot two without swabbing the barrel. And they did come out of the group on me.

I also had a chunk of deer salami that turned freezer burned on me. I had to throw it away somewhere, so I cut chunks about the size of a soda can. I set then back on the steel trap which was 80 yards away. I held dead center on them chunks of salami and you might say, I smoked that salami twice.

the Doctor told me not to walk in the woods because of my knee and back, but he never said anything about riding the ATV... it was a lot of fun today.

Good shooting Dave.
Dave - I heard of guys having to shoot a deer twice. But this is the first time I heard of someone shooting one again after it was processed....?
Now quit playing with your salami and go clean that Renegade.

That's mighty fine iron sight shooting Cayugad. Looks like you hit the perfect load right off the bat with 90 grains RS. I have become a firm believer in a straight alcohol patch between shots with 91% isopropyl.

Man, I'm dying to do some shooting - haven't made smoke since the 9th. I received the scope base adapter from Fox Ridge to put a 4x ProDiamond on the .54 GM Renegade barrel, but DANG, I didn't realize it wouldn't have mounting screws included. I have two screwsand need three. I've onlyshot that barrel once since I got it, about two dozen shots at 50 yards. Igot groups almost as good as those you got with your .50, which is pretty good for me with iron sights. Can't wait to get that scope on it and give it a workout at75 and 100 yards.

Hey Cayugad,it didn't occur to me when I frist read this post, but this is the Renegade with the TC factory barrel, right? That target sure blows the theory that a 1:48 TC barrel won't shoot balls well with a heavy charge.

June 1st I meet with a knee specialist orthopedic surgeon. He will then tell me what he wants to do. I hope it is nice and simple.

Semi.. this is a factory Thompson Center barrel with 1-48 twist. I found that if you push them a little hard, they tend to shoot real well. This one was shooting sweet today. Nice out side too.. It was in the high sixties, no wind, sunny and just nice to be out in a T-shirt and no jackets.

Nice shooting and it does look like you had a bunch of fun. I had the Hawkins Carbine out on Wednesday and also had a bunch of fun. I didn't takeany photos, but had some good results. I was shooting my .54 cal and shooting a R.E.A.L bullets. I was shooting a 430 gr. bullet. My carbine has a 1 in 24" twist and shoots conicals very well. I only shoot black powder. Gave up thesubs in anything but my inlines. I normally use 2F Goex. I just bouht a buch of the stuff and got it for only $10.00 a pound. It was from a friend that was getting rid of his stock.

I do promise that Iwill take photos of my next trip to the range.

Sure hope you don't need a knee replacement they are a sun of a gun. I had mine 4 years ago recovery was ok but still not the same as the original. But it is nice to walk without pain.
