Renegade @ the Farm Again!
 

Well, I was able to get out to the farm again this afternoon. It really was not a good day to go - it has been raining here all week - but about 2:00 it kinda cleared up and looked like it might be good for awhile. It was long enough for to get to the farm - get set up and shoot 5 lousy shots.

I have been stuggling with this Renegade to get it to shoot PRB's accurately. I had it shooting very in October and then I decided that I could make it shoot better and from there things went down hill. After shooting it earlier in the week and ending up with a 25 yard target that looked like a shoot gun group, I decided to do what Chuck suggested several months ago "shoot what shoots good." So last night - I reinstalled the Lyman peep and bore sighted it. Found a package of .015 cotton patches, I have been trying to get .018 pillow ticking to work.

Headed to the farm just sight it in and see if I could shoot a decent group again...

Really wish the rain had held off because the plans appeared to be coming together...

Things were looking good... even if I only got to shoot 25 yards...

Well keep that up. It looks promising.

Do you ever shoot any other powder besides Triple Seven? Perhaps your rifle just would shoot better with Pyrodex RS or Black Powder.

Looking finethere Sabotloader. I've never used T7 with balls, but that 60 grain load of FFFG is probably matching the velocity of 70 or75 grains of GOEX, so you're good to go. That T7 isn't burning up your patches? (Not that it makes any difference if the accuracy is there.)

Shucks Grouse, there's nothing more satisfying than getting PRBs to go where you want them to. Dang cheap shooting too.

We had to use those here in PA up until a few years ago. I don't miss them at all. I saw to many wounded Deer from bad hit's. I love shooting and hunting with Flintlocks. I actually shot two great Doe's this past hunting season with a Flintlock. Just dont like the PRB'S.:)

Looks good. I'm guilty sometimes of "knowing" what the gun should like.. Sometimes it's best to let the gun tell you what works. I understand the frustration though. I have a Hawken that loves paper thin patches and it blows them out every time but dang that thing is accurate... Sometimes they have a mind of their own.

Man I love me some PRB! Cheap to shoot and a lot of fun as well. I've yet [knock on wood] to lose anything to a RB.

Well, a bad hit is a bad hit, regardless of the projectile. I agree though, one is more likely toget away with bad shot placement with a modern bullet than with a ball, and you have to be more selective in your shot placement with a ball.

I really know they might work somewhat better. The problem, there is no available source of Black Powder around here and I certainly do not shoot PRB's enough to buy a case. Pyro I just plain do not like - just a personal thing. I did take a bottle of 3f Shockey Gold out with me this afternoon and as a last resort I was even going to try that.

The problem... I completly desinegrate pillow ticking patches. I shot 15 times earlier in the week and could not find a patch that was even close to resembling a patch. This afternoon I shot 5 shots found each cotton patch and they held up just fine. The one patch that looked somewhat bad was because I did even come close to getting the ball centered in the patch. I do not know why the cotton patch holds up so much better than than a pillow tick.... On the TOW sight they do have this warning concerning pillow ticking... So when I think about it and know that that I am using a HOT powder I guess I know what is happening.

I am going to order some .020 cotton patches and the description says they are Pillow Ticking says so what is cotton engineered fabric???

TOW's description of Pillow Ticking I really hope the monsoons give it up tomorrow so I can get back out to the farm for more experimenting...

The bolts of fabric at stores like WalMart andJoAnn's have a label on the end of the bolts that give the composition of the fabric. The pillow tick I got from JoAnn's said 100% cotton. To check fabric, take a small strip and light the edge with a match, then blow it out. If thereare synthetic fibers in it you will seesome melted "plastic looking" stuff, and smell it too. It is not advisable to do this inside the store. :D
