#11 Caps

I get my new Hawken Woodsman on thursday so I went out to but some supplies. There was not much to choose from. I knew how scarce things were but it really has effected all aspects of shooting. So, there were no #11 caps or #10 or any othre caps except US Musket Caps CCI. The guy told me they would work in my Hawken and against my better judgment, I bought some. I figured I would rather drive the hour to return them than another hour to buy them. So, will they work?

Power - I doubt it. But maybe one of the other guys could tell you for sure. I believe the musket caps are bigger. I was lucky enough to hit up Wally world at the end of the season and grab about 10tins of #11 magnum caps for something like $2 a tin.

Powerfisher

The musket cap will work you need to have a musket nipple to put them on.

I do prefer #11 mag caps to the musket caps, but a lot of people use them.

In the picture below, amusket cap nipple ison the left and a#11 nipple ison the right. You can get away with firingmusket capson a #11 nipple, but they donot fit correctly and will fall off if you're not careful. You can get a musket nipple that fits your gun and use either type of cap by changing nipples.

It was recomended that I replace the nipple so I have purchaed a new one. Its for #11. I knew it. The guy should have told me that I will need a musket nipple! Sportsmas Wearhouse in Reno. This isnt the first time I have been misled at that place. Live and learn. Thanks for your help.

Yep, you're going to have a bunch of headaches with using musket caps on a #11 nipple. You'll need to go back and get a musket nipple (make sure it has the correct threads. T/C's use different nipple threads than foreign rifles, and while the foreign ones will seem to screw in, they will not be tight enough and the nipple will eventually get blown out toward your face. Don't ask how I learned this). However, once you have the musket nipple, I think you'll be very happy with the musket caps. They put out a lot more flame than #11's, and they are much easier to handle and stay put better.

That's a fact. The TC thread size is 1/4 x 28. A metric nipple that's M6X75 will seem to fit but must not be used even though it will go in the 1/4 x 28 nipple seat and tighten down. If you're not sure the threads are right on a nipple, screwit infinger tight, then back it out 1/4 turnand try to wiggle it side to side. If you get any wiggle it's the wrong thread.

I came about 1/2" from possibly loosing my right eye to this mistake. I was still a newbie, and I thought that a nipple was a nipple. I put a foreign nipple (CVA or Traditions, I can't remember) in my White Mtn Carbine. Worked fine for about 10 shots. When it let go it had enough force to cock the hammer and the nipple hit my right eyebrow with enough force to draw blood. I found the nipple and the threads, which are too small and don't grip well enough, were sheered off.

That was a hard lesson learned.

Wow, it seems like the guy at Sportsmans Wearhouse should have told me about this. The thread size I mean. I did get a Traditions nipple for my Traditions Hawken so I should be ok but I will check it. This is definitely a safty concern. I will get what I find first. Either a Musket Nipple in the correct thread size or #11 caps. I get the Muzzy today and NEED to shoot it! I couldnt shoot last week cuz of the rain so I am having serious withdrawl symptoms. Thanks again for all the info.
