I've spent a small fortune on New Bullets this winter (see below) to try in my Savage ML. Can't wait for a decent day to do some shooting.
Barnes Original, 300gr, .458
Sierra Pro Hunter 300gr, .458
Barnes TSX-FN, 300gr, .458
Nosler Partition, 300gr, .458

I really like shooting the .458's (45-70) for elk - you are shooting a real rifle bullet...

I shoot the Nosler while elk hunting and I shoot the Sierra @ paper as i can not afford to shoot the Noslers... The Sierra's fly really close to the Noslers.

In my Knight I shoot 120 grain of T7-2f with Nosler in a Orange MMP sabot, In the Omega I do reduce the charge down to 110. Last year I dropped a cow almost in her tracks with the 110/Nosler combination from a Remington 700ml

When I checked her I had a hole on both sides of her body so I thought i had gotten a pass through... but when we skinned her we found the bullet in the upper leg bone.

Very impressive, looks like that Bullet performed flawless for you. Excellent expansion. That has to be some good eating as well.

What was really impressive is what it did to the internal organs as it passed through the chest cavity... Dark red jello - the internal shock the animal got over-rode the flight response - i really do like that...

It was good but my hunting partner and I slit the proceeds - so most of my share is gone + plus my son-in-law over in Kennewick claimed his share on the fact that he married my daughter... He raises beef so he traded out.. he would rather have the elk meat vs his own beef...

Got a 5x5 with that same bullet 3 years ago @ 60 yards.... but he did not drop as fast.. those bulls are tough fellows - he made it down the hill about 40 yards and then piled up.

fusion: From the looks of your list... you sure are determined to make a 300gr bullet your "go to" load.:D:D:D

And from the looks of sabotloader results with a 300 gr bullet... you made a good choice !

I have shot the Barnes Origonal 300g .458 and the Barnes TSX-FN 300g in my Savage 10ML2. Both shot excellent. If you want a blow by blow on the Barnes Origonal 300g with 4198, it is here:

down in the 2008 Season section. I used that all 2008season on Whitetails, my opinion of the bullet is, it is a bit too tough for Whitetails, kills them no problem, but they are a bit hard in the tip and don't expand well on close shots. They are great for elk and big game, but little old whitetails they are over kill. I shot them wth 67g of 4198 in a Crushed Rib sabot. They are great for 200 and 250 yard open field shots with the Savage, like cornfields in the midwest or long shots on Elk.

I plan on shooting the TSX-FN 300g (Barnes part number45843)this year with I am guessing 53g of 4198. I like the 4198 better than 5744.I am choosing 53g because BigMoose showed on another board, that 53g gave great accuracy with anohter 300g bullet,I figured the 5744 was going about2000 fps, and the 53g of 4198 is in the same ball park. That is the desired speed for a 45/70 bullet, so that is my starting point. The 5744 is dirtier and I like the 4198 a bit better, however you must have a very tight sabot. Here is where it shot with 5744, 44g with CR sabot, the sabot is very tight .458 bullets. They are going to shoot like a Barnes MZ 300g, and they are awsome. I shot the MZ in my Omega last year and killed 2 deer with it, DRT. Also shot 1 with my Knight and an MZ, 50 yards open sights, DRT. They perform well, open quickly and penetrate all the way thru, just what you want. Very accurate in my Omega also.

One of these days I will make it out west for an elk hunt. YOu guys out there are so lucky.

sabotloadereverytime i see that elk in that truck i have to laugh, it looks like it is bigger than the truck.I got
a box of sierra's im really wanting to see some kill reports on them.

I know and I swear their was no trick photography involved - i was standing on the bank looking down... but it was a decent sized cow... There was a lot of steaks in the two hinys and they were good....

The .458/300 Sierra - really might surprise you in how well it flys. It is a Pro-Hunter designed for the 45-70 so it should be a shooter and do the job when it hits...
