Got to shoot PRB's today...

I have a Renegade 50 1/48 that use to shoot PRB's really well - well for me that is... then I started my quest to make it shoot better. I started checking patches and changing patches, changing rear sights, changing powder - even went back to GOEX, BUT - I/it was shooting terrible.

So this weekend I changed everything back the way it was... I even promissed myself I was not going to look @ patches - just the results....

When I got to the farm I walked out what I thought was close to 75 yards. I forgot to take the range finder out with me so I gave it a real good 75 yard guess. I set up 6 clay pigeons in the snow, walked back to the truck put a target on the shot board walk out to 25 yards ( had the laser this time) and set the target up. Oh, another thing the wind was blowing fairly stongly which i was really hating...

Loaded the first round.... 70 grains T7-2f, Wool wad, .015 Cotton Patch and a .490 Speer Round ball. Went to my bench and I thought I would shoot a fouling round before working on the target. I picked a clay pigeon and took the shot - the dang thing desinegrated - it was gone! What the heck loaded up again, and again - and I kept breaking them - got all six - I AM A HAPPY CAMPER- all is well in the world... Never even bothered to shoot the target, and I did laser the pigeons my 75 yards was actually 82 yards.

I did see and pick up two patches on the way out.... they didn't look like new and I could not run them through the wash machine and use them again but I do not care... The gun shot and shot well - I think I am ready for that first Rhondy shoot...

Patches...

Now I can move on to the next challenge - Lehighs

Good shooting... and those patches look real good. The shredded ends are not a concern. What you want to watch is burnt and blown centers. 82 yards is good shooting on clay birds..

Rarely do my patches look like that. Often times burnt/ripped. :(

Well I have a friend that shoots a Traditions St. Louis Hawkin. And his patches look terrible, all blown apart, and the worst I have seen. BUT his accuracy is exceptional with the rifle. And as I told him if the accuracy is there, don't worry about the patches. We don't pick them up or eat them. So they indicate a problem, but with his accuracy there is no problem to me.

I get what I consider good accuracy out of my Lyman at 100 yds with PRB & Pyrodex. So I have kinda ignored the "problem"!

Nice job sabotloader, six fewer clay pigeons to foul statues in the park. :D Were those patches dry or lubed?

Good job with your renegade. Did you ever try any of cecils lead bullets in it? (Elites)

No, I have never shot any of his bullets... I got a pack of something of his here but never shot em.... I have shot a lot of different sabot/bullet combinations from Renegades though and a ton of Dan's Bull Shops.

I have a Rene with a re-barreled GM-LRH - during Idaho's ML seaso nthat is what I use with a 460 grain Bull Shop.... deadly on whitetail.

Semi

They were OX Yoke Pre-lubed + I put some secret mixture on them that an old timer from Troy gave me - It is turquoise blur and super secret - but he swears it works...

The wonder wad between the patch and the powder was a Wonder Wad pre-lubed with BB.

They do look like I could use them over again. The black spot in the middle is not really burnt - it is granuals of un-bunrt powder. So the T7 is definetly not over-heating the assembly...

It certainly was fun and felt good to have it shoot that well.... now the real test will come April 5 @ a muzzy shoot...

I did knock the poop out of those bird though... gosh it was fun
