My new Powerbelt Tip insert
And it works like a charm:D Its fun playing around and coming up with things.
This Plug fits flush with the Powerbelt, The other tip sticks out a penny thickness for added protection. ![]() Bullet on the right is the winner, Also it says 262 grains, I made a typo! It should be 257grains New. ![]() 295gr With another tip i made that has a little hard lead sticking out to smear over the nose of the bullet upon impact. ![]() The 245 and 295 grain Powerbelts NEVER could handle the 100gr Pyrodex RS charges before. I have to put the sprue cutter on the mold tomorrow and then i can start casting these up hot and quench them in cold water over night to harden. Its an interesting concept so far but i have to do a lot more work and learn as i go along. I badly need a drill press. |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
Interesting idea. What was the distance that you tested these at?
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
58 yards into semi-damp sand. I still want to make an aerotip but have no clue how to get the cone shape. I jb welded the 2 pieces of aluminum together and then drilled the holes out and threaded the cavity.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
You should just build a mold to make your own the way you wnat them. You could call it The Frontier Bullet :D
Seriously though, I'm sure you could get one made and it would be more consistent coming from a mold then it would altering an existing bullet. |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
Now I wonder where you got that idea.
The cone shape is easy if you have a hand motor drill and a drill press; put your piece in the drill press take a cone shaped grinding wheel and put it in you drill motor [hand ] make an upright for your drill press and strap your drill motor to it. If you position your drill motor right then when you bring the head of the drill press down it will grind a nice round cone shape. It really gives you a lot more options with the PB's. Lee P.S. if you want to make a high BC version use a brass bolt and cone the head so the edge stops just short of the curve of the shoulder . |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
you would THINK a bullet mold maker could do this. I had 6 places turn down $200 because they said they could not do it. After that i said fudge them, i'll do it myself. Once i get more aluminum and a bench press drill i will be all set. I feel the results will be a lot better once i get the lead temp. in the 700* range and then pour into the mold. I also read that ZINC is hard. Im not sure if my simple campfire will melt zinc though.

RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
If you just want to eliminate the hollow point clean it out with a drill and use a soldering gun to fill it with bulk solder. You could also drill it to the right size and thread it and screw an aluminium screw into it.Lee

RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
thats to much work. I wanted something that i can just press right in and go shooting.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
That's neat Devil. It's fun when a plan comes together and there are worse ways to spend your free time.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
Snazzy, Dont you think?:D Sprue cutter goes on tomorrow, had to buy the bolt and washer today.

RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
i'll have you know that this mold is a piece of art work!:D
Its fine until i can find better materials to build a sturdy mold. Was going to melt lead tomorrow but..... Its snowing [:@] |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
Be careful with that zinc. It is nasty stuff.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
I'm wondering if some other common compound, such as plaster, beeswax, epoxyor who knows what else could be put in that hollowpoint to achieve the same effect.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
ive done a lot of experimenting and this is the best, most efficient way to hold them together. Its a PITA trying to melt solder into the HP - I accidently melted a bullet with the solder gun LOL. JB is an even bigger mess.
Mold is complete! I'll test it in the next day or 2. Right now its time to play on the range. |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
I have been using a hot glue gun to fill the hollowpoints. Works for me as long as im punching paper. Not for hunting though.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
Did all of this Yesterday. Mold is working great.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'll do the 348's in a couple days. Have to get a load of hay in the morning [:'(] |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
![]() Still too pancaked. Long Shank, perfect mushroomed head is the ideal. Fully pancaked bullets are to be avoided, they shed their energy too fast. This bullet didn't loose much weight, which is great, however mushrooming this completly indicates the bullet shed it energy too quickly therefore little penetration. Again the ideal is deep penetration with a bullet that opens quickly and does not pancake. like this: Chap ![]() |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
i disagree. That pancaked bullet put ALL of its energy into the target (aka Deer in the woods)
13 1/2" penetration into damp sand is nothing to moan about. That nosler can not be compared to a pure soft lead conical. I have tested other pure lead conicals, maxiballs-maxihunters and even the hornady great plains and they all pancake. Thats what soft lead Hollow Points do. Including the Harvester Sabertooths. |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
I think 13 - 14" of penetration is just fine for deer- as long as you aren't attempting a raking angled shot through the whole body. If you're elk hunting, you'd probably want more penetration than that. Nice report!
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
if it were elk i'd be using the 348-405. and those penetrate darn near my entire sand box in factory form:D I planned on testing the 348s today but after unloading hay, cutting 2 horses out of a fence and then trying (we succeeded!!) to catch a llama thats wild, Im friggin tired!
Also have some 300gr .45cal platinums to test out! |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
Did you try to use a .177 pellet as the aerotip? I saw somewhere on here long ago as a possible option to fit in the crown. Those bullets open nicely. I've never shot them as I have my pet rounds.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
I am not surprised with your results plugging the hollow point. I spoke to one of the technical guys at powerbelt a couple of years ago afterI had a PB blow through a deer without expanding using a magnum charge. He said the best performing design would be aflat nose bullet shaped like thecurrent PB but without the hollow point. He also said that when people look at a bullet to buy, in the store, they like to see the hollow point and the flat nose bullet would not sell. So you can see with Powerbelt, Sales andMarketing is #1. I don't use them anymore nor doI use magnum charges. Below is a Barnes TEZ bullet I recovered from a deer I shot this year.

RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
The bullet went through the torso of the deer and stuck in the upper leg after exiting. Massive blood trail a blind man could follow. Shoot any load you want and they expand and don't fragment. I have even shot them into a tree and they still did not fragment.

RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
i would like to see threads inside a powerbelt so at the end of day,i could remove the powerbelt but i dont know if you could reuse the plastic skirt.
in a FLINTLOCK,LOW CHARGES I HAVE NOT FOUND A BETTER BULLET FOR HUNTING A BUCK. NO RECOIL, NO FLINCHING,LOW NOISE AND SMOKE,WILL OPEN UP AT LOW CHARGES,EASY TO LOAD. my favorite was the 370 maxi-ball in .50 cal, no more, its HOLLOW POINT 295/348 POWERBELT WITH 80 GRS OF 2F OR 70 GRS OF 3F. i would never use a powerbelt in a in-line. |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
cant reuse the plastic skirt. Well you can but when i tried it (i accidently melted one and had to find an replacement) and the accuracy of that bullet was say off.

ORIGINAL: MountainDevil54 cant reuse the plastic skirt. Well you can but when i tried it (i accidently melted one and had to find an replacement) and the accuracy of that bullet was say off. i had feeling you could not, so its the air co2 thing or just leave it in for a week or 2 during hunting. |
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
our hunting season is 9 days and they stay loaded until we fire at an animal or our rifles get wet. I'd rather fire it off in wet weather just to be sure. Another thing we do is make sure the drums are filled with powder. I sometimes take just a tiny bit of 4f goex and put it into my dads and brothers drums just to be sure. All of the bouncing around on the atv's can sometimes mess with the powder in the drum. My dads cabelas hawken has been the worse rifle yet as hes missed 2 deer in a row because his drum was empty. I hate that rifle of his.

RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
I have shot 5 deer with muzzleloader, all with powerbelt, all with inline and two 50grain pellets and 245gr hp. Now, none of them, from 80 yards to 40 yards penetrated all the way through. Also, none of the deer produced good blood trails within the first 40 yards...then massive blood for a short distance and then the deer. One deer did drop in its tracks. All the deer had lots of blood in the cavity and one of them I found lots of fragments near the front shoulder. I am in process of switching to something else, though I like the way they load and I guess they have never caused a loss deer, I am scared they will. I like how that Barnes TEZ kept its shape and weight...looks good. Might want to try that.
|
RE: My new Powerbelt Tip insert
i hope to use the 245gr PB this year. I want to try 80-90gr RS and see how it does. My Mtn stalker doesnt like 100gr RS.
