RE: Newest Acquisition
Very nice Dave, do you have a 54 and a 58 to complete a set?
If you do you might shoot all 3 on the same day and give us a comparison, I only have my 54's since I sold my 58, and the 45 I won years ago,I shoot for fun, that I gave to my dad and came back to me when he died. Lee |
RE: Newest Acquisition
Yes I do, I always meant to get a Big Bore Rifle, but never did. My .58 is a Green Mountain Barrel and for out right accuracy, that rifle is just hard to beat. It is a roundball barrel and Green Mountain sure did their job when they made it. I also have the rifle in .54 roundball barrel, and two of them in .50 LRH 1-28 twist barrels. That would be a lot of shooting... and a little carbine fast twist... and now a .45 caliber fast twist... :D:D:D

RE: Newest Acquisition
Well I ordered the stainless .45 caliber GMBbarrel for the rifle. That way I will know what barrel goes where. I actually did almost buy both. BUT decided there was no need for that.
It was -18º last night and I was waiting for it to warm up a little before I went outside to shoot. Finally around 12:45 pm, it hit 12+ so I figured that was good enough. Boy was I wrong. It might have been sunny out there, but that wind was brutal at times. I loaded 90 grains of Graf's & Sons 2f black powder, a moosemilk patch, and a cast ball that I bought. I was using RWS caps. Ignition was perfect in the rifle. I set the target out 35 yards. It was just the box I tested the TK2000 in the other day. I guessed I would be able to tell a roundball hit from bird-shot. The first shot on a clean barrel was kind of high, but depending on where this rifle was sighted in at, it could make a lot of sense. I was holding 6 o'clock on that white center. Shots 2&3 had me excited, then for some reason 4 kind of slipped out of there. 5 was back in the group though. It was too cold to swab. Just loading without gloves was bad enough. You almost welcomed walking to the target to check because you could warm your hands. So I shot all in all about ten shots, without swabbing. Towards the end, the rifle started to show it as it began to spray a little. I figured I would stop and wait for a better day to shoot. That warm weather kind of ruined me I guess. ![]() |

cayugad
Looks like that 50/48 shoots just fine also. Are you going to hang onto that barrel? I shot the Renegade theother day at the farm - the peep site makes a lot of difference when shooting targets. I was able to consistently hit pigeons at 100 off the bench and bags... My patches still do not look the best in the world, but the gun is shooting so ---do not know.... |
RE: Newest Acquisition
Looks like you got a good looking rifle and a fine shooter all at once, can't beat that.

RE: Newest Acquisition
Well it was too cold to swab, and towards the end, it was starting to throw shots. But the rifle seems sweet to shoot, and I am sure that when it warms a little and I get more range time with it, I will find the load it likes best.

RE: Newest Acquisition
Still good, for cold, wind and short range time

RE: Newest Acquisition
Nice pair of guns there Cay. Wish I had the money to buy one right now, I sure would like to find one like that. But, have to save up for a bit first.

RE: Newest Acquisition
Hear ya about the cold, but you're tougher than me, 20º is about my threshold for target shooting, add 10º to that if there's much of a wind. But I'm a son of the(mid) south.
Got to get me a Hawken or Renegade, the drop-in barrel option would be sweet. |
