Why do you need another one?

Why do you need another one?
This is a question that I have been asked by my wife, who I affectionately refer to as "the warden", time and time again since I got my first black powder gun 3 years ago.
I have never been much of a spender. We work hard for our money. We have three boys two in college. We live a pretty simple life and do without some material things that others take for granted. So why do I have this inner need for another gun when I have one in the safe I haven't even shot yet?
Why do I need another one? Can someone answer this.

Same reason you have more than one pair of pants or shoes (the wife should understand that logic).

Variety is the spice of life.

Because non of them shoot the same, maybe just the challenge of making one work. And the heavy hitters
on this site don't help either.

Well friend, it is not a question of why do you NEED another one. It's more ofyou WANT another one. Of course that is if you can afford it. Its obvious you have other obligations and priorities. Also you need to 'save for a rainy day' too. But when all is said and done and you have the extra cash then you and your better 1/2 should share. And maybe even include a nice dinner out.
Also, you can check the used racks out and tell her - "look, I can get this one and save $x.xx over a new one." Remember you can catch more flies with honey than with crap.

If it boiled down to need, I'd still have my Renegade and nothing else. These guns fascinate me. Its not like a center fire, where you buy the cartridges, load it, and shoot. Granted some cartridges shoot better then others, but with a muzzleloader the accuracy of that rifle is solely dependent on how well you do your job. I honestly think it is the challenge that muzzleloaders present to the shooter to make them work good. That is their attraction.

Why do you need so many golf clubs? The reason is that every one has its unique purpose. The same goes with guns. All different reasons. My wife HAS to have shoes. I dont even go there with her anymore and she has pretty much gave up on my obses...er, I mean hobby as well. And I still dont have as many guns as she has shoes!

Guns can be an investment if you take care of them. I have a shotgun that I bought in the 80's for $150. The other day I saw one at a gun show just like it, only not in quite as good of shape as mine and a guy was buying it for $500. That equates to nearly 8% APY. Not often that you get that kind of return on a car, purse, pair of shoes, etc.

Really, guns don't drop a lot in value so if you ever get in a pinch you can probably get a good % of your money back and maybe even make a little.

Kind of like when my wife starts to question why I am spending a $500 to keep my old Ford F150 running when it is only worth about that much. I tell her it is because I don't have $40,000 to buy a new one. There is always a way to rationalize it.

Thats my therory too......Not a muzzleloader but I want to buy a H&R Ultra Slug Hunter in 20 gauge just to play with. For a backup to my muzzleloader while deer hunting and for my son to use when he hunts with me. I already have 3 slug guns but I just kinda have that scratch that needs to be itched.

Yes, the marketing answer is "you came to the forum", "you saw the beautiful and awsome shooting rifles", you kept reading about them, reading about them, reading about them and "desire" set in, then ya gotta have one. That is the marketing answer.

The Bible has the answer of course: http://bible.cc/hebrews/13-5.htm
King James Bible
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Another verse says: http://bible.cc/proverbs/4-23.htm
American King James Version
Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

So putting these togetherto form a "principle for living", don't desire things just for things sake, protect your heart by learning to look away. My rule of thumb is "if ya lookfor over 3 seconds, you have want/desire growing inya, nip it in the bud." That is my personal wisdom on this issue.
