Just curious
How fast can you type ? Do you have to look at the keys ? Do you have a keyboard education ?
Do you make a lot of mistakes ? I for one took a typing class in high school but that was a loooong time ago. I am getting better I know where some of the keys are without looking but I mentally spell every word out when I am typing or writing so it is not real fast but getting better, but not as good as the kids. The keyboard seems to just smoke when they are on. Ps. I had to edit, I spelled something wrong :D:D |
RE: Just curious
Well I do have to glance down at the keysonce in a while. I have to smile because sometimes, it is like my fingers have forgotten every thing they learned over the years and just can not find a letter or symbol. I used to write countless reports and statements on a keyboards (remember the old IBM electric typewriter... I hated that machine). I never had a keyboard class, but learned the hard way on how to become fast.
Then of course Iproof read it to make sure the punctuation and grammaris correct (or at least to me). After that I like to run a spell check on what I put down. So yes, it seems fast, but to be accurate takes a little time. But it is well worth it. I was reading a report my one nephew was about to hand in to a class he has (this was a few months ago).I was shocked! I told him that he really needed to go over it and correct a lot of mistakes in his grammar, punctuation, and spelling. He looked at me like I was on drugs or something. So I started pointing out his mistakes. And he told me the teacher really does not care (which I told him I doubted). So I told him even if the teacher does not care, he should for his own self pride care. After all this was something hewas expressing and it was in his best interest to do it in a professional and clear manner. So we went and had him type it on my computer. Then I had him correct every thing he thought wrong. After that I let the computer check it. He was kind of surprised at the mistakes as well. But in the end, he learned to slow down, take his time, and concentrate a little on what he was trying to put down on paper. And, we will not even go into formal letters anymore and how they are written. Have you seen the kind of classes the kids have now? No American History, or Science, etc... they have some of the most off the wall named classes. But I guess the schools do about the same they did for me. They are taught information and knowledge. And I sure respect the teachers of today. The things they put up with in a class room boggle my mind. My sister is a teacher. She tells me some of the things that go on in her class room. When I was a kid I would have never thought of acting like some of the kids do in class. Because, when I got home, my Dad would have been waiting for me to have a "little heart to heart." Funny, it was never the heart that was all that concerned about the meetings with my father. BUT I did learn to behave (at least not get caught), do well in things, and strive to make myself better. |
RE: Just curious
It's been a few years since I was "clocked" but the last typing test I took I was about 60 words-per-minute.
I spend a min of10 hours a day at work on a computer so I have no choice... |
RE: Just curious
I have to watch the keys, otherwise, you would never be able to understand what I am rying to type.[8D]

fairly fast. All those years typing one handed in my teenage years helped with my typing skills.

RE: Just curious
I had a typeing class way back when Kids had sessions in the wood shed with their daddies for misbehaving. I took the typeing class because I just was not cordnated enough to trust my self in a class with sharp tools. Beside I lived on a farm, we worked with tools all the time fixing and making things. Back to typeing class, I failed that class as I could never get over 10 WPM. I type now with 3 or four fingers. I try to be care full with grammer and spelling but if I mess up if figure others do some too some so no big deal. If I really want to make a point and have all the I's dotted and the t's crossed plus grammer correct, I will type it out on a word program and let that fix all the mistakes or at least tell me it didn't like the word I used.
School!!!! I was watching the Late Friday night sports edition of the local news. There are two local High schools in town (west side and East side). they had results for both schools swim meet, the bowling, meet and the basket ball scores for both boys and girls for both schools. They told about how they both stood on the wrestleing & hockeyfront. Also training for base ball, track and scoor starts soon or has started. Maybe that is why they no longer teach things like math and other real life type classes. I would think it hard to carry a high GPA and still play all those sports. :D Al |

I use the hunt and peck method...........but I'm getting faster.

RE: Just curious
I took typing in High school fifty five years ago. There wasn't even electric type writers at that time. I hadn't typed until I got the computer in 2000. I have to watch the keyboard. I type with most of my fingers, but not the way you are supposed to. It is surprising how good it goes. I would really be in trouble if it didn't have backspace to correct my mistakes.

RE: Just curious
My first type writer (I still have it in a closet) was a pica style instead of an elite. Meaning the pica produces 10 characters per inch and the elite produces 12 characters per inch. I bought the thing second hand in a pawn shop, when I headed off to college. Little did I know there was a difference in typewriters.
When I got to English Literature 101 this nasty old teacher that insisted everything be typed of course had a fit when she discovered I had a pica. "You see young man, you get less words per page with your machine." She told me. And shewas going to make me get a different typewriter. So I lied and told her my Grandmother saved up all her money and bought me that for going off to college present. Well it must have melted her old heart. She fell for it. But made me type an additional page for every ten pages the others had to produce.. Actually the other professors liked my pica. They are easier to read as the letters are larger... :D |
RE: Just curious
I'm pretty good on the keyboard, but have to look at thenumbers and symbols. I also had a high school typing class. The teacher passed me either out of charity or so that she would not have me inher classagain to repeat it. But daily use of a typewriter and computer in my work served to hone the basic skill she gave me.
I despair at the lack of education in American History in today'sschools. I find students today have not even a basicappreciation of thethebrilliance and braveryof the founding fathers, the dangers ofvesting too much power and control ingovernment,or why our Constitution is such a wonderful document. They truly have no understanding of how much has been lost and is being lost every day. |
RE: Just curious
I have to look, i am up to both hands now.I took typing in high school for a easy credit.I guess it helps now some.

multi talented is one thing.. the ability to multi task is another.:D:D:D
|
RE: Just curious
Multi task? That's doing a number of jobs simultaneously none of them well or with any degree of efficiency. I took typing in high school. enough to get the hang of it but not much speed. I'm faster when I look at the keyboard.

RE: Just curious
I took typing in high school in "54" no letters on key board. If I remember the sentence
"Now is the time for all men to come to the aid of the cause" I could type that real fast, but now its 2 fingers and a thumb. RC |
RE: Just curious
Never took typing. I henpeck...fast but with many mistakes. If I dont go over my stuff when im done, it looks like jibberish. This post took me 30 seconds to type but 2 minutes to correct!
|
RE: Just curious
The phrase we used was "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country". And it's never been more true than it is now.

RE: Just curious
Try Mavis Beacon, it's a game that helps you improve your typing. I can say I used it many times and it helped me out tremendously but I still mistype things as well as miss things all together. I have slight dyslexia and well sometimes no matter how many times I type it, unless I stop and look down the letters just keep typing wrong! BTW – It’s a fairly inexpensive program that takes hardly any memory or horse power to run it. Hope this helps :)
