Primers
I previously shot Winchester T7 primers. I changed this past weekend to Federal Fushion primers (209) and I noticed that I had less of a crud ring from the t7 powder when using these...wondering what primers you all are using and if you have tried these? I think the Fushion primers burn hotter, so perhaps that is the reason.

I think you will find that there is a lot more than just primers involved. For instance Sabotloader don't have the problem of crud ring and I get it so bad that it takes me 5 minutes of serious cleaning to get it out before it is possible to load the next shot. There are a number of possibilities including what is use to clean and what is used to preserve as well as the primer. I tried the primers recommended to reduce crud ring and could not tell any difference. If they had not come out with Blackhorn 209 I was going to set up a test program and try and pin down the things that cause or cure crud ring but Blackhorn made it immaterial as it is not only unnecessary to wipe but actually detrimental to accuracy. Above and beyond that it reduced my group sizes by 50 percent and to me that says a lot. Lee |
RE: Primers
I need to try Blackhorn. Is it only available online? I've never seen it at any local stores. Also, would I assume correct that it is in loose form only?

RE: Primers
Just got some Winchester T7 primers to try in my Encore. Crud ring isn't bad with standard Winchester 209s but wanted to see if there was any real difference.

RE: Primers
A number of people were ordering through the local sports store here [it seems every one around here get horrible crud-rings] and he decided to stock it so now it 5 blocks and a few minutes to get some here. The Sportsmans Warehouse and Bass Pro also stocked it but they are an hour or 2 hour drive. We went together an bought a couple cases for the club when we were doing that I got a case to. If you buy by the case it spreads the hazmat fee and the shipping over 10 cans which makes it a lot more reasonable. I have not looked lately but there were a couple of places on the net that it was available for 25 or 26 dollars. Lee
