3" circle

I like Dave's question the other day so here's another.
75yds.....3" circle.......one shot......any shooting style....You gonna hit it?
Which gun?... taken from safe... loaded.... then fired no prep of any kind.
I know my T/C prohunter will kill a deer like that but I don't think I would hit the circle unless a little luck was involved.

RE: 3" circle

I think my Genesis with a 200 grain Shockwave and two pyrodex pellets or 100 grains of Pyrodex or you could load a 250 grain Barnes Expander MZ could do it. BUT because of my lack of off and shooting skill, I would have to be kneeling or leaning into something to pull it off.

Also I think my .58 caliber Renegade loaded 110 grains of powder 2f and a .570 Speer roundball, I could pull it off under the same kneeling or leaning conditions.

I just stink for off hand shooting. If you think you're a good off hand shooter. Draw a 2 inch circle on paper... set that out at 50 yards and shoot three times at it. See what the group looks like.

It would take luck to hit it off hand for sure (for me). But if I could "cheat" squatting with a good sling, maybe. Leaning across a solid log or rock with a shirt underneath definately. My PH would be used with a 275gr Parker BE using 110gr of BH209.

RE: 3" circle

Off a solid rest I would probably hit it with any rifle in my gun safe. Prone, probably with most of them. Any other position with a rest of some sort with at least 1/2 of them. Now these are centerfires. With the MLs. with the same 3 scenerios, bench, prone, any other position with rest - My Genesis would hit it as would my 2 percussion GM LRHs. The flinters, I would have to give myself a 50/50 chance. They wouldn't miss by much if they did.
Sorry if it sounds like boasting but an honest answer to an honest question. To me 75 yds just isn't that far. Now 100 yds - my answer would definately be different.
You look as some of the targets posted in here. Most of them are at 50 yds. And the better shooters, once they find a load for their MLs, will have all their bullets touching. I have a stack of such targets down in my gun room. So a 3" bull should be easy to hit at 75 yds with a rest of some kind.

Dave, I'm gonna try that offhand next time out with my 45 Renegade or 50 Hawken next time out. Many years ago I used to shoot offhand in competition shooting but lately I haven't shot a group offhand. Will be fun to see if I can still pack em in there.

any shooting style

At 75 yards and with a solid rest against a vertical or horizontal surface, I would be pretty confident of hitting itwith either the Mustang orthe Renegade with the .45GM LRH hunter barrel on it.I'd have about a 50/50 chance with the .58 Zouave or the .54 Great Plains flintlock.

Off hand????Better break out another canister of powder and a pocket full of bullets. It ain't gonna` happen. :D:D

My Omega with my hunting load 260 Nosler 105gr 777/3f from a kneeling position-I will hit the circle. Offhand just give me a bigger circle

My CVA Staghorn loaded with either a 370 grain Maxi Ball or a 240 grain .430 XTP and 100 grains of Goex 2F Pin nacle. Sitting position.

RE: 3" circle

I'd feel pretty confident with my .45 - 200 grain XTP & 95 grains 777 at 75 yards. 2" circle - no, 3" circle, I bet I could hit it at least 2 out of 3 times. Offhand too- I use a shooting sling - I started using a shooting sling with all my rifles about 8 years ago, and have gotten pretty good shooting offhand with it. 2 out of the last 3 deer I've taken with the ML were offhand shots with the shooting sling- one was a neck shot at a bit past 100 yards.

Not that I'm trying to brag- I've missed shots too, but I consider anything under 100 yards to be pretty close, and MOST of the time a pretty easy shot. - Watch, now I just jinxed myself for next year;)

RE: 3" circle

I would think thatusing any form of solid rest that this SHOULD BE EASY for pretty much any modern muzzleloader with a scope. If not, than further load development is necessary. Personally, I am not happy if I cant keep 5 shots inside 2" at 100yds, and that is probably not living up to all of a rifle's potential. As far as open sights and/or offhand shooting, that depends on the skills of the shooter. A traditional sidelock shooting patched round balls should also be capable of putting all shots in a 3" circle at 75 yds, but since most PRB shooters dont use scopes, this is often beyond ones ability as a shooter, not a factor of the gun. I myself am currently capable of keeping 5 shots in a 3" circle at 50yds with my .54 GPR and open sights. By fall, I plan on being comfortable with 75 yds, andif I can't keep them inside 3", I won't take a shot that far. If I feel a longer shot is necessary, I will take my .50 cal CVA Optima. All shots ina 2" circle at 100 yds with 300gr XTP and 100gr BH209.

RE: 3" circle

With any rest prone off one knee no problem off hand it would have to be a sling and elbow to rib shooting for me to hit 4 of 5. Lee
