Do you use loc-tite
I went to the range today to test the cabels 250 bdc retical.Shot once at 50 yards set the scope shot again i'mgood.Over to the hundred yard 0 on that then off to the 200 yard range, so i thought.I could not get the scope close and when i did, dirt next time. After about 20 shots i admitted
to my self you dummy you bought a cheaper scope. Now i have to go home and wright a report to the guys and eat a little crow. First let me tell you i was shooting 300 grain shockwaves with 150 grains of loosepowder. This load shook me, let alone the gun,i knew the forearm was getting loose, thats how i didn't notice nothing else.So when i was leaving i picked the gun up by the scope and thats when i felt it, the rail came loose. So blowing the day i came home took off the see thru rings, weaver rail and put on a two piece that came with the scope. Went out the back door shot 5 times was happy. Now do you guys use loc-tite on your mounts, or is this something i should just check off as a you didn't do it right the first time? |
RE: Do you use loc-tite
I used Loc-Tite for years and it worked fine. For the last few scopes I've mounted I just made sure the screws and holes were fully degreased and used a tiny dab of some of my wife's fingernail polish because I didn't have any Loc-Tite around. That has worked fine. The 3x9 Leupold on my Mustang was mounted over two years ago with fingernail polish and hasn't moved in over 1000 rounds, some of them pretty stout.
EDIT: Changed 100 rounds to 1000 rounds. |

RE: Do you use loc-tite
I stole a bottle of my wife's clear nail polish 20yrs ago and have been using it ever since ( I think I read about it somewhere). Mount all by bases& rings with it. It's a bit softer than Loc-Tite, I believe, but holds just as well with the added benifit of being able to easily loosen the screws and remove the base if you wish.

RE: Do you use loc-tite
My gunsmith friend was mounting a scope I bought once and I noticed he was not using lock tite. I mentioned that to him and he said if you de-grease the bolt holes, and bolts, there is no need for it. He said that more then often when you change your mind and want to remove the scope, that's when you really wish you were not using it. As he explained,he said if the scope is mounted properly, there is no need for it.
So the ones I mount, I have not used it. I have it, just not used it. |

RE: Do you use loc-tite
There was a pretty good amount of oil under the rail, and they was flat head screwdriver screws.Which i did
not like to start with. The new ones i put on are the hex screws. |

I still use loc-tite, just an old habit - hard to break I guess. For scopes and things that I might want to take apart again - I use 'blue' for things I want to stay locked i will use 'red' |
RE: Do you use loc-tite
I use it on my bases, but not on my rings. I've just always used it.

RE: Do you use loc-tite
I degrease and use finger nail polish as well...

I believe that is true...it's really not needed. I think I (and a lot of others) just overdo it! :( I as use the blue loc-tite on bases only. And as far as the rings, it only takes about 12 to 14" lbs. of torque to secure the rings. Any more and you will damage the inner adjustment tubes and mechanisms. You know you have tightened the rings too much, when you are at the range and make an adjustment and nothing happens!!!! That is because the inner tubes are bound tight and will not move. Lossen up the rings and walla!!! The adjustment takes. Another way to know you have tightened up the rings too much is when you take a scope from there rings and there are ring marks on the outter scope tube. Properly installed and torqued rings will not leave these marks. Hint, hint! ;) |
RE: Do you use loc-tite
Be Careful on Scope Basesand mount screws.Loc-Tight does not evenly disperse in the screw holes(even filling them in)causing uneven pressure on the screws, mounts and bases. If used, Just use as little as possible on the threads of the screw only, and never put any into the hole. This is a case is where a Lot is bad and a little is good. And never overtighten screws. BP

RE: Do you use loc-tite
Actually the big advantage of Loc-Tite is you can get the screws out. For scope size screws the purple color is fine, The blue will work, however its for larger screws. A little heat will definetly loosen Loc-Tite.

RE: Do you use loc-tite
I didn't use itthis time when I mounted a scope on my new Encore. I used QD rings, so its not a problem to check the mounting screws. I thought it would be a good test.

RE: Do you use loc-tite
I always use the blue/purple Loc-Tite on the bases and ring bases. Never anything on the top of the rings. When I'm really being picky, I use Loc-Tite and Fletch Tite(That Clear glue used for fletching arrows). I coat the rest of the underside of the bases as a sealer against water/oil and dirt. Seems to be working fine so far:)

RE: Do you use loc-tite
I've always used clear nail polish until recently. Now I use lock-tite blue.
|
RE: Do you use loc-tite
lock-tite on my base only ...never on my rings
|
RE: Do you use loc-tite
Have never used any thing on the rail screws other than plain hand toqure on clean holes and screws. I have never had a rail come loose. If any thing comes loose it is usally the screw that holds the mounts to the rails for me.
I do use clear fingernail polish to hold trigger adjusting screws in place as well as the bows on my glasses. :eek:150gr. pushing a 300gr bullet!!! I got a big huge bruise just reading it. :)Al |

RE: Do you use loc-tite
I always use Loc-tite on my bases and rings. I've just read recently that it isn't required on the rings. But I figure, I've never had a screw come loose (on my scope mount) using the loc-tite, so I will continue to use it.

RE: Do you use loc-tite
There is a tolerance on threads and threaded holes, if you drill and thread your own and make the slightly under size and degrease them well you really don't need it but its like insurance if you don't us it you just might wish you had. Always use the blue myself because if you use the red you may have to heat it if you ever want to get it apart. Lee

RE: Do you use loc-tite
After a shooting session or a day of Hunting, and the gun has been fired, I clean it. And as the Scope has to come off the Bases (I use bases and rings that return the Scope to Zero) I ALWAYS CHECK THE SCREWS TO MAKE SURE THERE SNUG. As long as you check em your good. Usually if they do come loose it's after a (First-Time) mounting of a Scope as they wer'nt as tight as they should have been, so always check them after mounting a Scope for the first time. BP
